Rams Could Prevent Splashy Vikings Trade

Minnesota Vikings fans are currently debating whether the team’s cornerback room for 2025 is in fine shape or needs help.

Rams Could Prevent Splashy Vikings Trade

The room showcases Byron Murphy Jr., Isaiah Rodgers, Mekhi Blackmon, Jeff Okudah, and Dwight McGlothern, among others, but some feel the unit needs one more dependable starter.

And if the Vikings’ front office agrees, seven-time Pro Bowler Jalen Ramsey, a former coworker of Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell, is available via trade.

But the former employer of both men, the Los Angeles Rams, is in the way of any would-be Minnesota trade for Ramsey.

Sean McVay Confirms Trade Interest in Jalen Ramsey

Rams skipper Sean McVay joined Adam Schein on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio last week, and when asked about his team trading for Ramsey, McVay wouldn’t swat the idea away.

He said, “There’s not too much of an update. He is a total stud, and you look at, obviously, he has continued to play at a really high level. He and I have kept in great touch even since we ended up trading him to Miami. Special competitor, great person, great father.”

“There are a lot of layers when you’re talking about a player of his caliber with regards to the contract, the compensation that they would be looking for in exchange for receiving a player of his magnitude. And so those conversations are ongoing, as I’m sure they are with multiple teams.”

Some believe Minnesota could be in the mix for Ramsey because of the connection between him and O’Connell, plus the alleged cornerback need for Minnesota.

McVay added, “And we’ll see, but we’re never going to shy away from opportunities to increase the competitiveness of our roster or add great players as long as it fits within the framework of everything that an acquisition like that would entail.”

The Rams are in the sweepstakes for Ramsey.

Jalen Ramsey on the Trade Block — For Sure

The trade block for Ramsey isn’t smoke and mirrors. Right before the draft, Ramsey’s current employer, Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier, confirmed that Ramsey could be gettable for the right compensation package.

The draft came and went, while Ramsey was not moved during the event. However, trade talks are still rampant for Ramsey, a 30-year-old who has not really slowed down in production as of late.

If the Vikings or Rams want the man, they can probably get him.

The Price Tag for Ramsey?

Because Ramsey will turn 31 in October, whichever team secures his services via swap with Miami won’t have to utterly break the bank. If he were 25, that would be a different story.

In reality, the Ramsey sweepstakes can likely be won with a 3rd-Round pick or so, and Minnesota is scheduled to have two in 2026, one extra courtesy of a compensatory selection due to Sam Darnold’s free agent departure to the Seattle Seahawks two months ago.

Theoretically, Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah might be able to send his organic 2026 3rd-Rounder to Miami for Ramsey — if McVay and the Rams get the hell out of the way.

PurplePTSD on Ramsey to Vikings

At our partner site, PurplePTSD.com, Janik Eckardt recently opined on Ramsey to Minnesota.

He wrote, “The former fifth overall pick was considered the league’s best corner for a while, proven by his Pro Bowls and three first-team All-Pro nominations. He spent the first three years and change in Jacksonville until the Jaguars shipped him to Los Angeles during the 2019 campaign. Following the 2023 season, the Rams sent him to Miami.”

“At 30 years of age, Ramsey might no longer be as explosive as he was a few years ago when he competed against O’Connell’s offense in training camp, but he still played fairly well last season. Ramsey produced a PFF grade of 76.9, ranking him 10th among 116 eligible cornerbacks.”

Now that Ramsey wasn’t dealt to a new team during the draft, a deal feels more likely after June 1st, when the dead cap burden for Miami will lessen.

Eckardt added, “Pairing Murphy Jr. with Ramsey would immediately give the Vikings one of the top cornerback duos in the NFL, and an argument could be made that it’s, in fact, the best in the business.”

“It would be a serious win-now move. Suddenly, putting more resources (the 24th overall pick) at the defensive line, the safety room, or the offensive line could make the Vikings dangerous entering the 2025 season.”

Other Trade Candidates for Vikings?

Suppose Minnesota doesn’t win the Ramsey sweepstakes or doesn’t partake at all. A cornerback like Greg Newsome II of the Cleveland Browns could be obtainable for a mid-to-late-round draft pick. His next contract is on the horizon, and trapped in Deshaun Watson-themed financial hell, the Browns may be unable to afford him.

Jaire Alexander is also on the trade block, though Minnesota and Green Bay rarely do business. The Packers might also outright release Alexander before too long, and Adofo-Mensah could pounce.

Minnesota could also investigate Jack Jones’ free agency after the Las Vegas Raiders dropped the cornerback a few weeks ago.
