Questions Answered: QB2 Prediction, Staying at Pick No. 24, Jack Jones to Vikings

Here’s this week’s batch of questions, with the NFL Draft 13 days away.

Question: With Joe Flacco off the board, who will the Vikings get as a backup quarterback?

Answer: We’ll roll with Carson Wentz.

The team is really down to slim pickings at QB2. This means one of two things: a) They enjoy Brett Rypien enough to nominate him as the primary backup quarterback and will just sign a clipboard holder for QB3 this summer.

b) They already know who they want after the draft when the 2026 compensatory draft picks won’t be affected.

The free-agent options are down to Ryan Tannehill and Carson Wentz. Drew Lock exited the sweepstakes on Friday when he signed with the Seattle Seahawks, and we would’ve loved him for the job.

But it may be more likely that Wentz signs on the dotted line than Tannehill. Wentz played for the Los Angeles Rams in 2023, and such quarterbacks usually get tossed around the Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan coaching trees.

We’ll lock in Wentz now as the QB2 prediction — to be signed right after the draft. If not, a Sam Howell trade with the Seahawks makes sense now that Lock is on that depth chart.

Question: If Minnesota doesn’t trade out of the 24th pick, who will they draft?

Answer: Jahdae Barron (CB, Texas), Kenneth Grant (DT, Michigan), or Omarion Hampton (RB, North Carolina).

Those three players seem worth the 24th pick for Minnesota, and if all are gone — they probably will be — a trade back makes sense.

Barron attached to Minnesota’s roster for the next five years would be glorious. Dream big.

Question: Do you think Kwesi will sign cornerback Jack Jones?

Answer: That might’ve already happened by now.

The Vikings expressed interest in Jones during the build-up to the 2022 NFL Draft and put in a waiver claim for him in 2023 when the New England Patriots cut him loose.

So, that past interest applies here. But why didn’t they sign him this week? He won’t count against the compensatory draft pick formula.

As a prediction, it’s probably more likely that general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah drafts a corner like Shavon Revel Jr. or Benjamin Morrison or signs one after the draft like Asante Samuel Jr. or Jaire Alexander.

Jones could be a sweet fallback plan, though.

Question: Any chance that the Vikings pick TreVeyon Henderson at pick No. 24?

Answer: It’s not an impossibility, but it’s unlikely.

Henderson is a stud draft prospect and may actually go off the board in Round 1. But because Minnesota added Jordan Mason last month, we don’t think the team will use a 1st-Rounder on a running back.

Instead, drafting a late-rounder like SMU’s Brashard Smith checks out, and Minnesota has already met with Smith via the Top 30 Visit draft process.

Still, we wouldn’t be mad one bit about Henderson to the Vikings. Kevin O’Connell said earlier this month that he wants his offense to become more run-heavy, and drafting Henderson would certainly be a way to ensure that changes.
