Back in October, when the Los Angeles Rams’ 2024 season was going nowhere, the NFL trade rumor mill connected Matthew Stafford to the Minnesota Vikings, if only for a few days.

The Rams beat the Vikings shortly thereafter and got back on track, ultimately defeating Minnesota again in the postseason.

Now, with the offseason here for all NFL teams, the Stafford rumor mill turned white hot over the weekend, thanks to Stafford’s wife, Kelly. She got in front of a microphone and seemed to endorse a Stafford trade out of Los Angeles, irked by Los Angeles’ plans to trade Cooper Kupp this offseason.

“I wasn’t planning on discussing this, but hell, why not? My husband wants to win, he’s not trying to put a team in a bad situation, if you’re catching my drift … you’re catching my drift. Trading away Cooper, I’m confused. We were one play away from going to the NFC championship, and I think if we go, we win,” Kelly Stafford said on a podcast late last week.

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay with offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell. O’Connell left the Rams in 2022 after a winning a Super Bowl in Los Angeles in 2021 and took over the Minnesota Vikings as head coach.

Husband Stafford turned 37 a few days ago and plans to play in 2025. It’s just that wife Stafford’s comments make it sound like a new team could be feasible.

Kelly added, “I have to be the dog in the situation. I want the respect that he deserves. I love the city of LA, with that being said, I love an adventure. Right now, if the Rams decided that they wanted to trade him, or Matthew decided he didn’t want to play for the Rams, I’m good. I would move my family. Yeah, that might be tough. First month, hard. After that, turns out, I like my kids to learn how to be resilient.”

Going to bat for her man, pretty standard, right? Yep — and then some began daydreaming about Stafford on the Vikings’ roster.

Minnesota employs 22-year-old J.J. McCarthy at the moment, chosen from the 2024 NFL draft as the long-term solution at quarterback. In all likelihood, he will lead the team in 2025. The Vikings must also decide on Sam Darnold’s future, the man who quarterbacked Minnesota to a 14-3 record last season, accompanied by a lousy postseason loss to Stafford’s Rams.

Trading for Stafford isn’t very realistic unless Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah wants McCarthy to marinate on the bench for another year.

But like all Vikings-themed rumors, this one will remain alive until Stafford recommits to Los Angeles, is traded to another team, or retires.
