This offseason, former Minnesota Vikings RB Alexander Mattison signed with the Miami Dolphins.

It came after Mattison spent the 2024 season with the Las Vegas Raiders following Minnesota’s decision not to re-sign him and instead to bring in Aaron Jones.

On Sunday, Mattison got his first chance to showcase his skillset to the Dolphins organization in an actual game when Miami faced off against the Chicago Bears. However, the preseason game would prove to likely mark the end of his 2025 campaign.

During the game, Mattison caught a 21-yard pass from QB Quinn Ewers before being tackled by safety Alex Cook.

Mattison stayed down after the hit, and he had to leave the game. Later on Monday, it was revealed the running back’s injury required neck surgery, and his season has almost certainly ended as a result.

“Dolphins running back Alexander Mattison underwent season-ending neck surgery Sunday in Chicago, per sources. Mattison hurt his neck during Sunday’s game vs. the Bears, was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and had surgery,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted on X Monday.

Mattison himself later took to his social media accounts with a heartfelt message for fans.

“Thank you so much for the love and support. To all who have reached out and sent love and prayers, it is truly appreciated. All is well and God is good. This may be the end of my season but it is not the end of my story,” Mattison wrote in part on Monday night.

Mattison, who turned 27 years old in June, spent his first five NFL seasons with the Vikings after being selected out of Boise State in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Over those five seasons, Mattison totaled 584 carries for 2370 yards and a 11 rushing touchdowns along with 100 receptions for 718 yards and six more touchdowns. The running back was promoted to the starting role in 2023 after Minnesota opted to part ways with Dalvin Cook.

In Miami, Mattison likely wasn’t going to fill a starting role due to the presence of De’Von Achane and Jaylen Wright, but he certainly could have been a valuable reserve.

Now, Mattison will have to wait until 2026 to get back onto the field for his next opportunity.
