Don’t Rule Out These Free Agents for the Vikings

The 2025 NFL season is fast approaching, but there is still time for teams to make some final touches to their rosters. There is still some unattached talent out there, so here we look at the remaining Vikings free-agent options.

VikingsTerritory weighs up the remaining Vikings free agent options for 2025.

Minnesota has assembled what appears to be a strong roster for the upcoming season, but there is still room for improvement in certain areas.

I will take a look at the remaining Vikings free agent options at four positions: cornerback, safety, running back, and tight end. These are the areas where an extra body on the depth chart would be beneficial in Minnesota.

Cornerback Options for the Vikings

  • Rasul Douglas
  • James Bradberry
  • Kendall Fuller
  • Mike Hilton
  • Stephon Gilmore
  • Shaquille Griffin
  • CJ Henderson
  • Michael Davis
  • Emmanuel Moseley
  • Asante Samuel Jr.
  • Caleb Farley

The Vikings may well think they are set at CB if they believe Isaiah Rodgers can step into a bigger role alongside Byron Murphy. With Jeff Okudah, Mekhi Blackmon, and Dwight McGlothern behind them, there is potential for the Vikings’ CB group to be better than some expect. Adding another strong player to the mix would only make the group stronger, and there are still plenty of options available.

There are different options, including bringing back players from last season, such as Stephon Gilmore and Shaquille Griffin, or acquiring another veteran, like Rasul Douglas, Kendall Fuller, or Mike Hilton. Alternatively, there are more Okudah-type signings available — players who came into the league highly rated but have suffered with bad form and/or injury problems.

The likes of CJ Henderson, Asante Samuel Jr., and Caleb Farley fit this mold and would be the type of player I’d like to see the Vikings look at, given the right price.

Safety

  • Marcus Williams
  • Justin Simmons
  • Julian Blackmon
  • Jordan Poyer
  • John Johnson
  • Marcus Maye

After losing Camryn Bynum in free agency, it has been surprising that the Vikings haven’t added anyone else at safety. Many thought it was a position the team would look at in the draft, especially with Harrison Smith surely in his last season. It seems that the Vikings are happy to put Theo Jackson into an increased role, but if they did want to add to the group, there are still a number of veterans available.

The most intriguing one to me is the talented John Johnson, who wouldn’t be available if not for a hairline fracture to his scapula that made him miss all but the first two games of last season. O’Connell and Johnson’s paths crossed in LA, and making him the latest signing to follow his path to Minnesota would make sense on a one-year prove-your-fitness type deal.

Minnesota has carried five safeties on the roster in the two seasons Brian Flores has been the defensive coordinator; that will change if the Vikings don’t add to their current crop.

Running Back

  • Jamaal Williams
  • Gus Edwards
  • Jeff Wilson
  • Nyheim Miller-Hines
  • Chase Edmonds
  • JaMycal Hasty
  • D’Ernest Johnson

The Vikings are well set at the top of the running back depth chart with Aaron Jones and newbie Jordan Mason. Behind them, there is only Ty Chandler of any note, leaving a space open for another veteran RB. After a quiet 2024 season and with new kick returning options, Chandler himself could be expendable.

There are several options still available on the free agent market, ranging from power runners like Gus Edwards to pass-catching backs like Nyheim Hines.

Two players who intrigue me are Hines and Chase Edmonds; both come on the back of a season lost to injury, but have a track record of being reliable depth players who can make plays both on the ground and through the air. If they are fit and ready to go, they strengthen the Vikings’ roster.

Tight End

  • Gerald Everett
  • CJ Uzomah
  • Hayden Hurst

Much like RB, Minnesota is strong at the top of the tight end depth chart with TJ Hockenson and Josh Oliver. Behind them is sixth-round rookie Gavin Bartholomew and a couple of undrafted rookies. I would be surprised if the Vikings didn’t sign at least an RB or TE in the coming weeks.

There are three veteran TEs still available to take on the mantle of the experienced TE3 left vacant by the departed Johnny Mundt. They are Gerald Everett, CJ Uzomah, and Hayden Hurst. In my opinion, Everett and Hurst would both be excellent signings to add even more depth to the Vikings’ position of strength.
