Colts Sign Former Vikings WR

Former Minnesota Vikings 1st-Rounder Laquon Treadwell has made his way back — again — to an NFL roster.
The Colts have signed a former Vikings WR, bringing the veteran pass catcher onto their practice squad roster, with hopes of a regular-season call-up.
The Indianapolis Colts released Treadwell on Tuesday amid roster cuts but quickly added the veteran wideout back to the practice squad.
Treadwell will now be one call-up away from Indianapolis’ regular season roster.
Yes, Laquon Treadwell Is Back Again
Treadwell has unusual staying power in the league for a player who really never does much of anything.

Laquon Treadwell Re-Ups with Colts on Practice Squad
The Colts were fast to recall Treadwell’s services, plopping him on the 2025 practice squad.
The Colts Communication team announced Thursday, “The Indianapolis Colts today signed wide receiver Laquon Treadwell to the practice squad. Treadwell, 6-2, 215 pounds, participated in Indianapolis’ 2025 offseason program and training camp. He originally signed with the team as a free agent on July 24, 2024.”
Indianapolis has 16 men on its practice squad, and Treadwell is one.
Bizarre NFL Staying Power
Treadwell emphatically never lived up to his Round 1 billing from 2016, but the man adamantly has NFL staying power. He just never goes away, despite failing to post respectable receiving numbers. His best season occurred in 2021 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, tallying 434 receiving yards that year.
He has averaged 15 receiving yards per game in his career and has consistently found employment, nevertheless. And Treadwell is used sparingly on special teams, so it’s not like that’s his jam.
A Vikings Bust
Treadwell was supposed to be the next big thing in Minnesota, especially as the Vikings rarely have problems drafting wide receivers and subsequently cultivating WR talent. Randy Moss, Justin Jefferson, Percy Harvin, Adam Thielen, Stefon Diggs, Jake Reed, and others can attest.

Yet, Treadwell became the exception to the rule, a true 1st-Round bust who did not break out into stardom.
Minnesota waited patiently on Treadwell, too. He spent four years of his rookie contract in the Twin Cities, appearing in 53 games and banking 701 yards and 2 touchdowns. Every year from 2016 to 2019, the Ole Miss alumnus made the Vikings’ roster cut and then did little after.
Here’s his NFL resume to date:
- Minnesota Vikings (2016–2019)
- Atlanta Falcons (2020)
- Jacksonville Jaguars (2021)
- New England Patriots (2022)
- Arizona Cardinals (2022)
- Seattle Seahawks (2022)
- Baltimore Ravens (2023)
- Indianapolis Colts (2024-now)
Expectation for 2025
There’s a chance that a Colts receiver gets hurt, and Indianapolis promotes Treadwell from the practice squad. In fact, he played quite well in the preseason, enough to surprise some fans when Indianapolis released him on Tuesday.

Generally speaking, Treadwell will likely stay on the practice squad, and if he is called up, catch a few balls, and that’ll be that until he signs with a new team’s practice squad next year. It’s what he does.
More on Treadwell
Before Treadwell was added back to the practice squad, HorseshoeHeroes.com‘s Lee Vowell wrote about Treadwell and his teammate, cornerback Juju Brents: “The proverbial writing on the wall was likely obvious to Treadwell when he got a lot of run in preseason Week 3 when the Colts were playing their backups, and QB3 Riley Leonard was starting at quarterback.”
“Treadwell was great in the first half, but he should have been. He was playing against guys like him, who mostly weren’t going to make their team’s rosters. The receiver caught all of his five targets, including a 59-yard touchdown reception, and maybe that will be enough to land on another team. His major problems have been that he often gets hurt, seems to be a one-note receiver (go deep or go home), and, with Indianapolis, he had no roster spot.”
Treadwell turned 30 this summer.

“The Colts’ six-deep wide receiver group has been known since April, and Treadwell was an outlier. He was far too big a risk to keep around, even if Indianapolis is completely unsure of how its cornerback group will shape up. The team recently signed Xavien Howard and is entertaining the signing of veteran Mike Hilton,” Vowell added.
“Hilton and Howard are well past their primes, but have done more than Brents has ever. Or, to be truthful, probably ever will. Even when he has played for the Indianapolis Colts, he hasn’t been good. Neither has Laquon Treadwell in his entire career. The Indy roster is probably better without Brents or Treadwell on it.”
The Vikings will play the Colts again in 2028.
