Virtually ever since Brian Flores joined the Minnesota Vikings’ coaching staff in 2023, one question has surrounded the defensive coordinator.

When will Brian Flores get back into the head coaching mix? Of course, despite some rumors that he would be sought after last offseason, Flores remained with the Vikings after he did not receive any interview opportunities.

However, 2025 could be a bit different as Flores confirmed he had interest in one head coaching position during a press conference on Tuesday: the New England Patriots.

During the press conference on Tuesday morning, Flores was asked multiple questions about potential head coaching opportunities in 2025.

Flores said that he would take all requests for head coaching interviews this offseason, and when asked about interest in the Patriots job, he said, “I would say yes.”

Of course, Flores has a long coaching history with the Patriots. His first NFL job came in New England during 2004, and he stayed with the organization until 2018, taking various roles such as scouting, special teams assistant, safeties coach, and linebackers coach.

That led to his first (and only to this point) head coaching role with the Miami Dolphins in 2019 after the team went 7-9 in 2018 and fired Adam Gase.

Miami went 5-11 during Flores’ first season in 2019, but they saw drastic improvement in 2020 with a 10-6 record. Then, 2021 saw a bit of a step backwards with a 9-8 record, but after a 1-7 start, Miami needs to go 8-1 over their final nine games to get to that point.

Despite the strong finish, Miami made the questionable decision to move on from Flores, which led to Flores’ filing a lawsuit against the NFL. That lawsuit is still ongoing to this day, and it may have played a role in him not landing another head coaching job to this point.

Instead, Flores took over an assistant defensive role with the Steelers in 2022, and of course, landed the defensive coordinator role with the Minnesota Vikings in 2023. Since then, he has turned the Vikings’ defense into one of the most exciting units in the NFL.

The Patriots finished the 2024 season with a 4-13 record, and as a result, they moved on from Jerod Mayo. They also already have two interviews lined up for Tuesday with Pep Hamilton and Byron Leftwich.

Overall, the Patriots are a very interesting landing spot for any head coaching candidate. They arguably had one of the worst rosters in the NFL during 2024, but they seem to have locked down a potential franchise QB in Drake Maye after selecting him third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Ultimately, it may be tricky for Flores to land any head coaching opportunities until his lawsuit gets cleared up. One thing is clear though, there is clearly interest in Flores getting back into the role at some point. We’ll see if it happens in 2025.

Until then, the Vikings still have a playoff run in front of them that should be the main focus.
