The NFL moves pretty quickly. Just ask running back Cam Akers and corner Shaq Griffin, the ex-Vikings who most recently did their work for the Seattle Seahawks.

While updating some of the roster shuffling taking place in Denver and in New York, NFL insider Ian Rapoport offered the news coming out of Seattle: “The #Seahawks waived RB Cam Akers and CB Shaq Griffin.” By getting placed on waivers, the NFL’s other thirty-one teams have a shot to put in a claim for one (or both) of Akers and Griffin.

A contending team would be wise to scoop up Mr. Akers.

Still just 26, Akers has proven to be tremendously resilient. He has overcome some serious injuries in his still-young career that began with the LA Rams. In fact, he worked his way back to help the Rams win the Super Bowl when Kevin O’Connell was helping that team as the OC. Akers has since been added in Minnesota a trio of times: in 2023, 2024, and 2025 (take a guess about what MIN does when they need a runner in 2026).

The Vikings were able to run out the clock following the first down.

There’s then the reality that he’s capable of helping on specials. He can run reasonably well and catch the ball. So, too, can he be used to pass the ball, as he demonstrated in London.

The 2025 season has involved Mr. Akers carrying the ball 5 times for 19 rushing yards. The 3.8 yards-per-carry average is modest, to be sure, and yet we’re talking about a very small sample. Note, as well, the single target (incomplete) alongside completing his lonely pass for a 32-yard touchdown.

Meanwhile, Griffin has been working through a modest season.

He was last season’s CB3 in Minnesota, coming in behind Stephon Gilmore and Byron Murphy Jr. Within his 572 defensive snaps and seventeen games (three starts), Mr. Griffin offered the Vikings 41 tackles, 2 interceptions, 6 passes defended, and 1 tackle for loss. Just a steady, solid season for a veteran who offered Minnesota a single year of work.

The Seattle stop was a homecoming since he entered the NFL as the No. 90 selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. The team to take him? Seattle, of course.

His current season has seen him play in a pair of games, starting a single one. His stats show 7 tackles within his 77 defensive snaps.

Not unlike Cam Akers, Shaq Griffin could help a contender. He won’t be locking down the other team’s WR1 on a weekly basis, but he’s a solid veteran with good size.

Lately, there has been a lot of chatter about where the Vikings are going. J.J. McCarthy continues to generate criticism while some look ahead to the 2026 NFL Draft (possibly targeting a corner). Goodness, there has even been some chatter about opting for runner Jeremiyah Love, a fantastic talent out of Notre Dame. In other words, the exact positions that Akers and Griffin play.

Next up for the 5-8 Vikings is a Cowboys game on Sunday Night Football. The 10-3 Seahawks will be battling the Colts.
