What If … The Vikings Only Make 4 Picks?

The 2025 NFL Draft kicks off on Thursday, and the Minnesota Vikings have just four picks at the current moment. They are set to pick 24th overall and then don’t have another selection until 97th overall in the 3rd round. With fifth and sixth round picks to follow, that rounds out their current allotment.

What If … The Vikings Only Make 4 Picks?

There has been plenty of talk to suggest that Minnesota could trade back. That makes some sense in that they don’t have a substantial pressing need, and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah may be looking to take additional swings before completing the process.

On the flip side, it stands to reason that the Vikings may want to grab the best of what they can. Picking in the first round would allow Minnesota an opportunity to grab the best player of their choosing, and realistically, that talent could factor into the roster right out of the gate.

Why the Vikings may seek to generate more draft capital is understandable. Their roster isn’t filled with youth, and they’d be well off to generate succession plans at multiple positions. They are also in a spot where they could be concerned with winning now, and quality then becomes a better addition than quantity.

Beyond just that, there is the track record of the man making the draft selections. Adofo-Mensah hasn’t exactly done well when it comes to identifying prospect talent. He has seen plenty of misses, and that hasn’t escaped him even in the first round. Looking to take shots on deep-cut type picks probably isn’t something that will suddenly become an asset for him.

If a spot on the roster still needs a quality starter, it’s probably the cornerback position. There could be some top names available at 24th overall, and one that has consistently been mentioned is Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron.

Other spots, such as line talent on both sides of the ball and the safety position, have also been identified in mock drafts. With Adofo-Mensah’s work during free agency, Minnesota should feel like they are in a position to draft the best player available. Trading back into the second round would take that opportunity away from them.

A four-pick draft would certainly not be a class that leaves much room for error. It could be the best case scenario for a team looking to add high-level talent, though. Then it would immediately become time to work on the undrafted free agent pool again.
