Contract Extension

Of course, the Minnesota Vikings haven’t declared that they won’t bring back safety Camryn Bynum. He was among the most fun pieces of the 14-win team from 2024.

Thank You, Camryn Bynum.

After the team decided to extend Theo Jackson, though, it looks like he’s on his way out.

Minnesota had to make decisions at the safety position. It still remains a possibility that Harrison Smith will retire, although it looks like he may have another run in him. That leaves Josh Metellus as the other option, and there’s a need for Brian Flores to have some veteran leadership on the back end of his defense.

After moving into the spotlight this season because of his play and dances, there should be a relatively robust market for his services. The former 4th-round pick has played through his rookie contract with Minnesota, and it’s ok that the sides go their separate ways.

Last season, Bynum picked off a career-high three passes. He backed that up with a career-best three passes defended, as well. His 96 tackles were substantially lower than the 137 he recorded in 2023, but there were plenty of whiffs late, too.

Bynum became synonymous with the spotlight as the season went on. Thinking about the Vikings’ celebrations and the Minnesota defense without him will be challenging. However, he can bring that same infectious personality wherever he goes next.

While Minnesota won’t close the door and still has plenty of cap space, there are far more pressing needs than adding another safety that would be little more than an extra commodity. If Bynum can’t find something he is excited about, then maybe the sides work back around to one another.

Theo Jackson now gets to step in and work alongside Harrison Smith. Like Bynum and Josh Metellus before him, he’ll have the leadership and tutelage of a future Hall of Famer. Smith can help to develop Jackson at the highest level, and Minnesota gets a chance to turn the page at a position that remains a focal point of their defense.
