We Should Stop the Vikings Trade Debates

The Minnesota Vikings currently sit at 3-4, facing a schedule that could quickly put them in a bad spot. Realistically, they needed to get off to a 4-1 start, and there was hope for some stolen victories against an increasingly difficult schedule as well.

The Minnesota Vikings sit in a weird middle ground as the trade deadline approaches, but they should be focused on sitting this one out.

Then Minnesota lost its starting quarterback, and now it has lost the backup as well. A win-now roster has done anything but, and an offensive line that was infused with dollars has been nothing short of mediocre.

Vikings Must Stand Pat at Trade Deadline

Kevin O’Connell has proven to be a good leader of men, but he’s up against the most difficult task of his short career. Players dealing with injuries keep mounting, and the Vikings find themselves with odds increasing by the day.

The NFL trade deadline never sees the flurry of activity seen in either Major League Baseball or the National Basketball Association. There’s likely never going to be a time when it changes. The Vikings may feel as though they are stuck in the middle with a record hovering around .500, but they also have to be realistic with themselves.

This team is not a player or two from being substantially more competitive. They also don’t have a ton of talent that is performing at a level where parting them out makes the return worth punting on the season. Whether the rumor points to a buyer or a seller, it’s becoming increasingly clear that Kwesi Adofo-Mensah should stand pat.

This roster, the head coach, and the general manager may flop. That would be unfortunate, but it represents a single-season cycle. If that happens, the draft-pick compensation should be substantial, and hopefully Adofo-Mensah can do something he has rarely done—hit on a pick. If fortunes turn, maybe Minnesota finds itself vying for a late playoff spot.

At any rate, a sport that already struggles to make the trade deadline much of an event should want a team like the Vikings to hold firm and see what they can do the rest of the way. It’s not a fun or exciting route, but it certainly looks like the right one.
