Who Really Shot Down the Aaron Rodgers Idea for Vikings?

Of course, the possibility that Aaron Rodgers is coming to the Minnesota Vikings won’t be dead until he heads to another team. The reality is that the franchise has operated all offseason in a way where they are spending significant dollars on the other aspects of their roster.
Who Really Shot Down the Aaron Rodgers Idea for Vikings?
J.J. McCarthy represents everything the organization has been pushing for in recent seasons. A young quarterback on a rookie deal allows the Minnesota Vikings to spread out their salary cap dollars. Even Aaron Rodgers, at this stage of his career, is going to cost a considerable amount of money.

So, where did all of this come from, and how did it fizzle out?
There’s no way it will ever be public which parties within the Vikings organization want what. That doesn’t mean we can’t read some tea leaves. The Wilfs ultimately make any decision they would like as they write the checks. They also haven’t yet written a new check to Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, which would likely limit his ability to push back on anything they want.
Of course, Kevin O’Connell has been vocal about his feelings regarding J.J. McCarthy. It’s clear the head coach believes in his young quarterback. O’Connell took Sam Darnold to otherwise unprecedented heights last season, and McCarthy brings an arguably more talented skillset for him to work with.

All year long, O’Connell has seen McCarthy in meetings and has been able to plant seeds that he can hopefully begin to sow in the near future. It seems unlikely that he would push for an aging quarterback, even if there is a slight shred of hope he presents a clearer path to the Super Bowl.
Players could fall on either side of the fence. Minnesota has plenty of elder statesmen, and they have brought in more than a couple of older free agents. Those guys could be chasing the opportunity to win a ring before they hang things up, and someone who has done it will always have a level of allure.

Realistically, the answer is probably too murky to tell. No matter how hard Dianna Russini continues to push for it to happen, it seems the ship has sailed. We just won’t ever know who turned the captain away.
