Staying the Course with Kwesi Adofo-Mensah Is a Real Risk for Vikings

This offseason, the Minnesota Vikings spent an absolute boatload. Only the New England Patriots handed out more money in free agency, and with Drake Maye under center, they look like a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is getting very little return for his investment, and now, multiple years in, that may be the problem.
Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has flopped for the Minnesota Vikings, and the franchise has almost no choice but to make a change this offseason.
You’d be hard-pressed to find any legitimate source that suggests that Adofo-Mensah has looked competent when it comes to drafting. His inability to identify prospect talent has put Minnesota in a position where it has needed to spend substantially on free agency. Oftentimes, the decisions have been band-aids for failures on the youth level.
Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah Hasn’t Earned Much Goodwill
Given where the season has gone for the Vikings, it’s pretty hard to present a reason that makes sense for Adofo-Mensah to return.

The Wilfs let their general manager allocate a substantial amount of cash to players on the open market. It hasn’t mattered at all on the record, and individually, they haven’t fared well either. Short of depth veteran Eric Wilson looking like a star, the group has fallen short of expectations.
This offseason is the exact reason why selling another year of Adofo-Mensah as the answer doesn’t make sense. It was clear there was a delay in offering a contract extension. That doesn’t kick in yet, and the time to make a change is now. After handing your leader an open checkbook and expecting them to make things right goes horribly wrong, you don’t dive further down the rabbit hole.

Kevin O’Connell has his warts as a head coach. He is sometimes blinded and probably needs to give up calling plays. He is not the reason this team went nowhere, and he’ll likely be a significant part of the reason they rebound. The same cannot be said for Adofo-Mensah.
Minnesota attempted to go out of the box with its replacement for Rick Spielman. It flopped, and going backwards would be welcomed in a heartbeat. If the Vikings want to continue down this path in the future, they’ll only delay a level of relevancy that could be achieved so much more quickly by making the aggressive move.
