Kevin O’Connell Is Coming for Derek Falvey’s Title

There is little crossover between Major League Baseball and the National Football League. Fortunately —or unfortunately — for Minnesota fans, the state has a team in each league. If there is a level of crossover for the Vikings and the Twins, it’s in their leaders.
Kevin O’Connell continues to spout word salad during Minnesota Vikings pressers, and it’s embarking on Derek Falvey territory.
Derek Falvey leads the Twins front office, whereas Kevin O’Connell leads the Vikings team. They don’t have the same level of responsibilities, but they are both getting very good at yapping to say absolutely nothing.
On Thursday Night Football, Kevin O’Connell put Carson Wentz on the field after the debacle of his performance in the Philadelphia Eagles game. Wentz is a veteran who has been around the league for years. You’re not going to reinvent the wheel with his performance, and he has proven where his limitations lie.
Kevin O’Connell, Derek Falvey Do the Spider-Man Meme
While Wentz was scraping himself off the turf on Thursday night, drying tears from his eyes, O’Connell was flailing his hands on the sidelines in disgust. It wasn’t enough to prompt him to give Max Brosmer a shot or call plays that developed quickly. It didn’t turn things over to the running game or try to make changes that could have salvaged the outcome.

At the postgame presser, O’Connell delivered a bunch of meaningless drivel that had zero substance. He started with the announcement that a healthy J.J. McCarthy would start next week, but that only matters because it diverts attention from what everyone just saw in front of them.
There’s no doubt Kevin O’Connell is a good leader. He has proven capable of getting more out of his players, and he certainly galvanizes a locker room to get behind his message. He also steps up to a podium and routinely offers nothing of substance while believing those in front of him will slurp up the crumbs being presented to them.

It should be expected that the purple team will have more of these games left this season. Regurgitating the same garbage postgame isn’t going to hit home, and failing to make in-game adjustments won’t help either.
Derek Falvey has perfected all of these talking points for the Minnesota Twins while fans and media roll their collective eyes. O’Connell risks damaging his own coaching prowess by spouting the same hollow messages in the face of adversity he creates.
