“Boring” Draft Start Would Be Beneficial for Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are just days away from being on the clock for the 2025 NFL Draft. They currently hold the 24th overall pick and then unfortunately don’t have too much draft capital after that. Their additional selections come in the third, fifth, and sixth rounds.

Of course, as they have done in recent years, Minnesota will host a draft party at U.S. Bank Stadium. The plan is for fans to gather and celebrate together as they watch the next rookie be selected for the 53-man roster. It would be disappointing for those who look forward to the made-for-television event to go home without a celebration.

Unless they are celebrating a trade for additional capital, though, that’s what the Vikings should plan on doing.
The reality is that Kwesi Adofo-Mensah did significant heavy lifting during free agency. The Minnesota Vikings had a ton of room under the salary cap and wasted little time spending it. Both the line’s interiors were substantially improved, and the secondary got some additional firepower as well.

It can be argued that Minnesota still needs to get younger, and they could grab an additional guard to challenge Blake Brandel for the starting spot. There’s a need to add another cornerback to the defense, and they may have to take one who can start out of the gate.
Still, though, at the 24th pick, there shouldn’t be a substantial falloff to the top of the second round. Minnesota should be open for business and looking for a team that wants to move up. The Vikings can pivot through multiple options and don’t have to be stuck on a specific player.
If someone at the top of their board falls into their laps, stick and pick. If not, adding additional middle-round picks will set them up to take multiple swings on prospects that can help them this season and beyond.

Sure, it’s not a fun or sexy plan. Drafting 24th isn’t likely to net any more of a substantial prospect than taking someone a few spots back anyway.
