Vikings Quietly Set Up a New Starter for Success

The Minnesota Vikings turned the safety position over to Theo Jackson early this offseason. The move quickly indicated they would be letting fan-favorite safety Cam Bynum walk. That proved to be a wise decision, considering his new deal with the Indianapolis Colts. It also showed a serious commitment to the former depth player.
The Minnesota Vikings tabbed Theo Jackson as their next starting safety early on this offseason, and good teachers will surround him.
Jackson is entering his fourth NFL season after being drafted in the 6th round by the Tennessee Titans. Last season with Minnesota, he played in all 17 games and logged just 7% of his snaps on the defensive side of the ball. Despite the lack of a track record, it’s clear that Minnesota and Brian Flores trust their new starter.

Part of what generates trust in Jackson may be just who he’ll be surrounded by. Harrison Smith is a lock for the Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honor following his playing career. It’s also more than logical he could find his way into the NFL Hall of Fame as well. He has been doing it for years and has spent his entire career with the Vikings. If there’s someone to learn the spot from on the field, he’s the guy.
The Vikings Are Trusting the Safety Spot to Theo Jackson
Josh Metellus is no slouch, either. Although he doesn’t have the track record that Smith does, he is a player who came out from under the radar and has emerged as one of the best utility weapons on defense across the entire league. Jackson taking over for Bynum allows Metellus to continue operating in his unique fashion, and the veteran can guide him through defensive sets as well.

It’s fine to be worried about what Jackson will do during his first season as a starter. It’s also logical to see a team that basically went all in this offseason, throwing their belief behind the guy they handpicked early on in the process.
I think there’s probably still reason to be skeptical about the cornerback situation. Depth there gets questionable pretty quickly. The safety spot is one that the Vikings appear content with, and their steadfast presence there is quite the ringing endorsement.
