Most Vikings Rumors Now Focus on One Specific Position

Last year, quarterback discussions dominated the Minnesota Vikings’ months of February, March, and April.

Most Vikings Rumors Now Focus on One Specific Position

Folks speculated about which passer Minnesota would draft, a debate mostly between Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy, and a little bit of Michael Penix Jr. McCarthy solved the debate.

This g0-round, and two weeks before the 2025 NFL Draft, cornerback — not quarterback — is the subject of most Vikings rumors.

These are those rumors and theories.

Jack Jones, a New Free Agent

The Las Vegas Raiders somewhat surprisingly kicked Jones to the curb this week, and he’s free to sign anywhere in the sport. Jones’ release by Las Vegas peaked Vikings fans’ interest for three reasons. Number one: some think Brian Flores’ defense could use an additional corner for depth, especially those who don’t put much faith in newcomer defender Jeff Okudah. They consider Jones a more trustworthy fix.

Second, Minnesota met with Jones during the build-up to the 2022 NFL Draft. The New England Patriots later chose Jones in Round 4. But if interest existed back then, well, why not now? The same general manager, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, runs the show.

To round out the Jones rumors, Adofo-Mensah put a waiver claim on Jones in 2023 when New England cut him in the middle of the regular season. The Raiders had priority, but Minnesota wanted him, nevertheless.

That’s a lot of clues.

Jaire Alexander, Perhaps Disgruntled in Green Bay

Alexander battled injuries in 2024, and even when he appeared close to full health, he never really saw a regular season field. Put plainly, he soured in Green Bay, and the Packers will reportedly trade Alexander or cut him in the next few weeks.

Based on the Vikings’ rich history of onboarding cheese-wearing turncoats, Alexander may be the next in line after Brett Favre, Ryan Longwell, Za’Darius Smith, Greg Jennings, Aaron Jones, and others.

Too, if Minnesota signed Alexander, he could be the premiere cornerback on the 2025 roster if he played in his purest form.

Asante Samuel Jr. Unsigned

A couple of weeks ago, a popular Minnesota sports network ran with a rumor that claimed Asante Samuel Jr. has a handshake agreement in place with the Vikings, promising to sign in Minnesota after the draft when his would-be contract won’t cancel a 2026 Vikings compensatory pick.

The rumor involved somebody’s neighbor at a Miami nightclub who saw Samuel Jr. wearing a Vikings hat. It was presented in anonymous fashion. On the surface, the rumor felt suspect, but VikingsTerritory‘s sources have said, “Don’t dismiss it.”

The Wild Sauce Gardner Rumor Mill

A social media account with anonymous overtones claimed in March that Sauce Gardner would end up in purple via trade sometime before or during the draft.

Because fans would love that arrangement to the utmost, they chose to believe the rumor, and it has not died through early April.

One must wonder why the New York Jets would get rid of Gardner — he’s a Top 2 or 3 NFL cornerback — but this hope won’t die until Minnesota drafts a rookie corner, signs Alexander, for example, or it just eventually fizzles in the summer.

The Current CB Group

Why so many CB rumors? Here’s a look at the current group —

Reserves:
Jeff Okudah, Dwight McGlothern

Notable Practice Squad Types:

Folks debate whether that unit has enough oomph for a Super Bowl-contending team.
