It Wasn’t … Jaire Alexander or Bust

The Minnesota Vikings missed out on Jaire Alexander last week when he signed with the Baltimore Ravens. It could have been another fun footnote on the Packers to Vikings trail, but maybe Minnesota was never even interested.

The Minnesota Vikings didn’t need to be all in on Jaire Alexander, and their cornerback options are still extensive if they want to add.

It wasn’t just Jaire Alexander or bust for the Vikings, though. Last season, the secondary looked to be a significant issue, and as the regular season got close, they did a deal with Stephon Gilmore. If it can be assumed that veteran Shaq Griffin was an addition along the lines of Isaiah Rodgers, then there still may be a move yet to be made.

There are a handful of quality veteran options still on the open market. Names like Mike Hilton, Rasul Douglas, and Kendall Fuller are all on the higher side of the spending options. Of course, Minnesota could pick up the phone and call either of their departed veterans, too. Then there’s a trade possibility, and a splash as big as Jalen Ramsey.

For now, though, none of those decisions have to be made immediately. The Vikings will open training camp later this summer, and roster cutdown moves will need to be made. Brian Flores and Kevin O’Connell can continue to observe practices and see what they have at the position.

The returning and undrafted talent is unlikely to emerge as top starting options. Byron Murphy Jr. is clearly the cream of the crop, and it’s possible that Rodgers could surprise and shoulder an even bigger load. The depth behind them may solidify just how important it is to slowplay big moments for those types and grab another option.

No matter what Minnesota decides to do, the lack of a move for Alexander doesn’t suggest an unwillingness to do something in the future.

There is still quite a bit of time until the Vikings kick off their 2025 regular season, and you can bet this team didn’t bring in a bunch of win-now veterans to stop short on another deficiency.
