The Golden Arm Is Going to Make Great Comedy for Vikings

There was a time when J.J. McCarthy was regarded as a handoff merchant incapable of pushing the football down the field. He had talented running backs behind him at Michigan, and the defense shut down opposing offenses. Because he wasn’t throwing it like he ran a Mike Leach (RIP) offense, doubters got loud.

J.J. McCarthy will showcase his arm strength for Minnesota this training camp, and it should make people look silly.

For some reason, this offseason, a narrative emerged that he lacked arm strength. That has never been the case, and probably could not be less true. He has showcased in multiple situations just how hard he can sling it, and the windows he’ll find for Jordan Addison and Justin Jefferson should be hilarious.

The Minnesota Vikings were indoors on Wednesday for training camp practice, but J.J. McCarthy wasn’t bothered by the humid conditions. Minnesota’s new quarterback was slinging the ball all over the place, and specifically pushing it downfield.

J.J. McCarthy Show Off His Stuff for Vikings

There will be plenty more of this as training camp progresses. Saturday allows for fans to be in attendance, and the Minnesota Vikings have joint practices with the New England Patriots later this summer. The amount of deep passes and highlight reel throws that we should expect will be immense.

Minnesota doesn’t need McCarthy to be the silver bullet that gets them to the Super Bowl. That said, the bar set by Sam Darnold isn’t exactly high either. He was effective because of the pieces around him, and McCarthy will have that same talent and then some.

If Kevin O’Connell can develop his new signal caller into a legitimate weapon, then the rest of the NFL should officially be on notice. It’s going to start during training camp, but if it continues all season, watch out.
