An on-again-off-again former Minnesota Vikings running back recently received an audition from the New York Giants.

The New York Giants recently worked out a former Vikings player, raising eyebrows as New York evaluates depth ahead of the 2025 preseason and the regular season.

He’s Myles Gaskin, the man who used to be released and re-signed by the Vikings like a months-long inside joke. Gaskin tried out for the Giants’ roster this week, hoping a preseason trial will eventually be the result.

Myles Gaskin Could Be Back in the Pros before Too Long

The Giants extended an olive branch to Gaskin this week.

New York Works Out Myles Gaskin

NFL pundits and fans aren’t expecting too much from New York this year, particularly because of the quarterback situation involving Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston, and rookie Jaxson Dart.

But New York is doing its damndest to formulate a playoff-contending roster nevertheless, and part of that plan called upon Gaskin this week.

GiantsWire‘s John Fennelly wrote Tuesday, “The New York Giants signed free-agent running back Jonathan Ward on Monday in the wake of some injury news. Injuries to rookie backs Cam Skattebo (hamstring) and undrafted rookie Rushawn Baker (knee), who was waived/injured, left the team shorthanded in the offensive backfield for the short term, so the team brought in several possible replacements for a tryout.”

“Among them were Micah Bernard, Myles Gaskin, and Isaiah Spiller.”

Ward got the nod so far, but Gaskin will hold out hope that he’ll be next.

Gaskin’s Time with the Vikings

Comically, the Vikings had a wild relationship with Gaskin, starting in the summer of 2023 and ending — at least for the time being — on Christmas 2024.

This log is remarkable. Utterly remarkable:

Gaskin also served as Minnesota’s kick returner from time to time, though he appeared in just five Vikings games since the start of 2023. Minnesota used Gaskin on seven offensive plays and 26 special teams snaps. He always filled an emergency RB practice squad role.

And evidenced by the screenshot above, Minnesota was not shy about fluctuating Gaskin’s status on the depth chart.

Here’s the man’s destination list through six seasons:

  • Miami Dolphins (2019–2022)
  • Minnesota Vikings (2023)
  • Los Angeles Rams (2023)
  • Minnesota Vikings (2023–2024)
  • Jacksonville Jaguars (2024)

The Giants’ Current RB Group

These are the Giants’ running backs at the moment, following the Gaskin tryout:

  • Tyrone Tracy
  • Devin Singletary
  • Cam Skattebo
  • Dante Miller
  • Eric Gray
  • Jonathan Ward

Tracy conducted a bit of a breakout campaign as a rookie in 2024. Skattebo is a recent legend among Dynasty Fantasy Football managers. Singletary is a textbook RB2-RB3 type at the juncture of his career.

Head coach Brian Daboll will likely split carries between Tracy and Skattebo when New York’s offense gets rolling in the regular season, though Tracy is the unquestioned RB1 for now.

Gaskin’s 2025 Outlook

Gaskin will probably end up on a team’s practice squad. The Vikings can attest — that’s what he does. He briefly assumed RB1-RB2 duties with the Miami Dolphins in 2020 and 2021, nearly compiling 2,000 yards from scrimmage in those campaigns.

However, beginning in 2022, the Dolphins severely deprioritized Gaskin’s workload, and his career has never recovered.

Some club will likely sign him to its practice squad before the 2025 season is in the books, especially with his special teams expertise.

More on the Giants’ 2025 Offense

SI.com’s Evan Orris and Patricia Traina sized up the Giants’ first depth chart release this week.

They opined on the quarterbacks, “If you have followed training camp, you know that Dart has seen a significant number of reps with the second team offense, which has created the illusion that there is a battle for the job, an illusion that head coach Brian Daboll didn’t exact squelch the fires of when on the first day of camp he left the door open for a competition for the backup role behind starter Russell Wilson.”

“Dart is expected to get a lot of work in the preseason, but as far as where he starts the 2025 season on the depth chart, it might not look good for the 25th overall pick in the draft to be QB3, at least not for the entire year.”

And on the running backs: “Devin Singletary has been the subject of trade speculation by some national media outlets who have been trying to fill time until there was something to talk/write about. Still, the truth is Singletary likely isn’t going anywhere, given how Daboll has gushed over him.”

“And rightfully so. Skattebo might be the future, but he’s been slowed down since the spring with a left leg injury believed to be a hamstring strain. Until he can get on an NFL gridiron and show he can pass block, Singletary is going to rightfully be ahead of him on the depth chart.”

Gaskin turned 28 this offseason.
