Freshly Released Vikings CB Signs with Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles have swooped, signing cornerback Ambry Thomas, whom the Minnesota Vikings cut loose last month.
A recently released Vikings CB quickly found a new landing spot with the Eagles, where he’ll hope for a chance in the regular season before too long.
The Super Bowl champions evidently wanted cornerback depth on their depth chart, and Thomas is perfect for the assignment.
It’s a practice squad fate for Thomas, once a regular contributor on the San Francisco 49ers’ roster a couple of years ago.
Ambry Thomas Found a New Home in Philadelphia
Thomas hopes to hear his name called for the regular season sometime this season.

Eagles Sign Ambry Thomas to Practice Squad
Thomas didn’t stay unemployed for long after Minnesota shaved him from the roster last Tuesday amid roster cuts.
Eagles.com broke the Thomas news on Friday: “The Eagles made multiple roster moves less than a week from their season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. Philadelphia signed running back Audric Estime and defensive back Ambry Thomas to the practice squad. To make room for them, the Eagles released cornerback Eli Ricks and wide receiver Terrace Marshall.”
Not for nothing — some Vikings fans and websites [like this one] would’ve enjoyed seeing Audric Estime in purple and gold. No luck.
A Brief Stay in Minnesota
Minnesota signed Thomas to its practice squad last December, keeping him around after the 2024 season concluded with a January futures contract.
He served as a dark horse roster sleeper, mainly because the Vikings’ cornerback room felt a little suspect all offseason and summer. In fact, many believe Minnesota’s CB room remains shaky.
All told, Thomas lasted eight months in Minneapolis and will now try on Philadelphia for size. Philadelphia and Minnesota will clash on October 19 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
Thomas’ NFL History
This is Thomas’ resume through four seasons:
- San Francisco 49ers (2021–2024)
- Indianapolis Colts (2024)
- Minnesota Vikings (2024-2025)
- Philadelphia Eagles (2025)
The 49ers trusted Thomas with almost 500 defensive snaps in 2023, and he accounted for a 71.5 PFF grade. It’s why some Vikings-themed websites (this one) and fans believed Thomas could make some noise this summer in Eagan.

In total, the Michigan alumnus has played 855 defensive snaps in his career.
The Eagles’ CB Unit
With Thomas in the mix, these are Philadelphia’s cornerbacks:
- Quinyon Mitchell
- Cooper DeJean
- Kelee Ringo
- Adoree’ Jackson
- Jakorian Bennett
- Mac McWilliams
- Parry Nickerson (PS)
- Ambry Thomas (PS)

Nick Sirianni’s roster is renowned for its depth, on the whole, but this group might be one injury away from sparking some fan anxiety.

Janik Eckardt remarked on Thomas last month, “Thomas entered the league in the 2021 draft and was a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers. He spent his collegiate days at Michigan, playing in the secondary alongside Joshua Metellus, a well-known commodity in the Twin Cities.”
“Noteworthy is that Thomas opted out of the 2020 season and was still selected as a third-rounder in 2021, demonstrating that there is undoubtedly some talent. In the pre-draft process, he was measured at nearly six feet, and he ran a 4.4 40-yard dash. Thomas appeared in 12 games in his debut season, and he started five of them. He was a rotational defender, playing 333 defensive snaps and 101 on special teams.”
Thomas will turn 26 next week.

Eckardt added, “As a sophomore, Thomas was demoted and played only 47 defensive snaps in 15 games that year. In 2023, however, he once again played in 15 games and logged about half of the team’s defensive snaps (481). That season, he received a solid PFF grade of 71.5. Last preseason, Thomas suffered a broken forearm and was placed on IR. In December, once he was seemingly healthy, the 49ers released him, and the Colts claimed him off waivers.”
“After failing his physical, he signed with Minnesota’s practice squad and later accepted a futures deal from the Vikings. The Vikings have piled up a bunch of late-round draft picks in recent days, and those could (or should) be used to acquire help at wide receiver and cornerback.”
Philadelphia takes on the Dallas Cowboys in three days to open the NFL season.
