WR3 Option for Vikings Signs Elsewhere

There’s a decent chance that Brandon Powell, Trent Sherfield, or Jalen Nailor turn out as productive WR3 options in 2024, but for the Minnesota Vikings’ sake, nobody knows which man will get the nod as a starter.

WR3 Option for Vikings Signs Elsewhere

Therefore, many Vikings fans have daydreamed about WR3 options since the draft, and now another option is off the board — Allen Robinson, who joined the New York Giants’ roster on Thursday.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted, “Giants announced they signed former Steelers WR Allen Robinson.”

Robinson joins his fifth team of the last decade with a resume that includes these destinations:

  • Jacksonville Jaguars (2014–2017)
  • Chicago Bears (2018–2021)
  • Los Angeles Rams (2022)
  • Pittsburgh Steelers (2023)
  • New York Giants (2024)

The 30-year-old has tabulated 562 career receptions for 7,028 yards and 43 touchdowns in 127 career games. Robinson was at the peak of his powers a few times, notably in 2015 when he totaled 1,400 receiving yards in Jacksonville and 2019-2020 in Chicago, tallying 2,397 with Mitchell Trubisky and friends in those two campaigns. Recently, however, his production dried up, failing to bank over 450 yards in a season since 2020.

Robinson to New York is the latest in a flurry of WR3 moves. If Minnesota was interested in another candidate, the market picked up in the last week, with Tyler Boyd to the Tennessee Titans, Chase Claypool to the Buffalo Bills, DJ Chark to the Los Angeles Chargers, and Odell Beckham Jr. to the Miami Dolphins.

Two weeks ago during the draft, the Vikings were expected to explore a WR3 in the middle or later rounds, to no avail. This 2024 class is peppered with WR3 types, but Minnesota evidently enjoys its current WR3 corps or plans to sign a player from the remaining-but-dwindling market.

  • Marquise Goodwin
  • Mecole Hardman
  • Deonte Harty
  • Julio Jones
  • Zay Jones
  • Hunter Renfrow
  • Sterling Shepard
  • Michael Thomas
  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling

These are the Vikings current wide receivers:

Most fans predict Powell, who caught a game-winning touchdown from Joshua Dobbs last November, to win the third WR job if no free agents sign between now and the start of the regular season.

Robinson will turn 31 in August.
