Vikings Quietly Cut Semi-Popular Playmaker
Someone had to be the odd man out when T.J. Hockenson and Dalton Risner rejoined the Minnesota Vikings’ active roster.
Vikings Quietly Cut Semi-Popular Playmaker
At least temporarily, Minnesota chose wide receiver Trishton Jackson.
The Vikings’ main social media team tweeted last weekend: “The Vikings have announced the following roster moves. Signed TE Robert Tonyan to the 53-man roster. Waived WR Trishton Jackson. Elevated DL Jalen Redmond and OLB Bo Richter to the active roster for tomorrow’s game.”
Unfortunately, Minnesota later lost that game to the Detroit Lions by a score of 31-29, the purple team’s first loss in 2024.
Without Jackson, Minnesota will continue to showcase this wide receiver group:
- Justin Jefferson
- Jordan Addison
- Jalen Nailor
- Brandon Powell
- Trent Sherfield
- Lucky Jackson (Practice Squad)
- Jeshaun Jones (Practice Squad)
- Thayer Thomas (Practice Squad)
It’s worth noting that the Vikings frequently add players back to the practice squad after a waiver, and such a move is likely for Jackson — as early as Monday.
If Jackson’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he dazzled in the preseason — from cover to cover. Versus the Las Vegas Raiders, Cleveland Browns, and Philadelphia Eagles in August, Jackson tabulated 9 receptions for 154 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns. And those were stat lines from partial games. He didn’t play all four quarters of each game. On the scoring acumen, Jackson hit paydirt in all three contests. His endzone participation took no weekends off.
Jackson appeared in two regular season games so far in 2024, tallying just 10 offensive snaps. He’s actually been a part of the Vikings roster and practice squad since 2021, carried over from the Mike Zimmer era to Kevin O’Connell’s team.
He caught 66 passes for 1,023 yards and 11 touchdowns in his final season at Syracuse four years ago. And he was the guy who grabbed a two-point conversion from Joshua Dobbs in last year’s Vikings win at the Atlanta Falcons.
Justin Jefferson even pounded the table for Jackson in August: “He’s a dog. He’s from Detroit. He has that Detroit mindset. Just the way he comes to work every single day — he’s a hooper, so he knows how to move and how to get open.”
“The catch point of the ball, he’s definitely making plays out there. He’s showing up every time on the film, so the more he shows up, the more has a chance to be out there on the field on Sundays,” Jefferson added.
It’s a safe bet that Jackson will return to the practice squad before too long.
