Vikings Nopedy Nopes: The J.J. McCarthy Conspiracy Theory, Jordan Addison’s Injury, Blake Cashman

The nopedy nopes are weekly Minnesota Vikings-themed items that we’re not buying. It’s a spin-off of our rumor mill, and we hope you enjoy. Here is the 23rd batch of Vikings nopedy nopes in the series’ history.

The Nopedy Nope: The Vikings’ leadership is intentionally prolonging J.J. McCarthy’s injury recovery time length to enhance its job security.

Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy tore his meniscus last weekend and is scheduled to miss all or most of the 2024 season. And according to former Vikings linebacker Erin Henderson, the team’s leaders, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell, purposely maximized the length of McCarthy’s injury recovery to hedge their bet on job security.

“They were going to be fired this yr. They shut JJ9 down to buy another yr. Yall not ready for that conversation yet tho,” Henderson began the conspiracy rounds on Thursday with a tweet, the first of many similar posts.

To believe the hypothesis, one would have to buy into coordinated sabotage between Adofo-Mensah and O’Connell while the pair totally kept their bosses — ownership — in the dark.

Henderson also ignored the varying degrees of a meniscus injury, pigeonholing all such injuries as the same: “So you want me to believe that there’s been people that have had complete repairs on their meniscus and got shut down before surgery or before the season even started?”

The former Viking also claimed that his theory would come to fruition and that he would be considered a “genius” for recognizing it first.

This one is just ludicrous.

Verdict: Nopedy nope.

The Nopedy Nope: Jordan Addison’s injury this week was a season-ender, thus thrusting Minnesota into full summer chaos.

Addison was carted off from Wednesday’s joint practice with the Cleveland Browns, the same day that J.J. McCarthy was declared lost for the season. Because the word “cart” hit social media, many assumed the bad news would not stop and that Addison would be out for the season, as well.

A day later, O’Connell updated Addison’s status, explaining he avoided major injury. It is unclear if he’ll be ready for the regular season with the ankle ailment. Stay tuned.

Folks merely assumed that the bad cosmos had engulfed the Vikings’ orbit — a natural emotion in the wake of McCarthy’s injury. But the Addison ordeal paled in comparison. He’ll be fine and back sooner than McCarthy.

Verdict: Nopedy nope.

The Nopedy Nope: Linebacker Blake Cashman needed elaborate surgery for an injury.

A social media aggregator tweeted this on August 15th:

Cashman needed stitches on his finger. Stitches. “Underwent surgery” made it sound like Cashman needed major attention.

Verdict: Nopedy nope.
