Vikings Cut 14 Players
The Minnesota Vikings roster’ will dwindle from 91 players to 53 by the end of Tuesday, and the franchise got a head start on releases Monday, dropping 14 players.
These men will not be a part of the initial 53-man roster:
- Matt Cindric (OL)
- Matt Corral (QB)
- Chuck Filiaga (OL)
- A.J. Green III (CB)
- Justin Hall (WR)
- Mo Ibrahim (RB)
- Neal Johnson (TE)
- Tyler Manoa (DL)
- DeWayne McBride (RB)
- Doug Nester (OL)
- Owen Porter (OLB)
- Sammis Reyes (TE)
- Spencer Rolland (OL)
- Jaylin Williams (CB)
The surprises? Not many. Minnesota drafted McBride, a once-promising running back, 16 months ago in Round 7, and some had big plans for the youngster. With Monday’s cuts, though, the McBride experiment in Minnesota is over.
Meanwhile, the Vikings signed Cindric and Filiaga just a few days ago, perhaps evidence that a player like Dalton Risner could be on the way out. In the end, those men were apparently signed for depth heading into the final preseason games — bodies for one game, that is.
General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah also recently signed Ibrahim, a former Minnesota Golden Gopher. His name recognition in the North Star State turned heads, and many remembered his illustrious career as a Gopher. However, he lasted just a few days for the Vikings.
Minnesota’s running back room is set, especially after the departure of McBride and Ibrahim. One man still may depart, but the room consists of these men just 13 days before the start of the regular season:
- Aaron Jones
- Ty Chandler
- Kene Nwnagwu
- Myles Gaskin
Of Monday’s 14-player list, all players besides McBride were not drafted by Adofo-Mensah. Cindric, Manoa, Nester, Porter, Rolland, and Williams arrived via Vikings’ undrafted free agency. Others journeyed from other teams to Minnesota in the last two seasons.
The quarterback room also took shape with Corral’s release. No one truly had Corral winning the QB3 job — or anything close to it — but not long ago, Corral was a touted college prospect who could’ve been drafted rather high, at least that was the buzz building up to the 2022 NFL Draft. Yet, in two Vikings preseason games, Corral struggled, and now the club must decide to keep Jaren Hall on the active roster or sneak him onto the practice squad.
Twenty-four more Vikings players will exit stage left between the time of this article’s publication at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, August 27h.
The regular season kicks off in 13 days at the New York Giants, a game that has even point spread, a pick ’em.
