In exactly three weeks, the Minnesota Vikings’ roster will shrink from 91 players to 53.

Vikings Audition 3 New Wide Receivers

The club has plenty of decisions to make throughout the roster, but on Monday, it auditioned three new wide receivers.

Outwardly, the franchise doesn’t appear to need more WR depth, but to each its own. These are the three men trying out for the roster.

1. Deon Cain (WR)

Cain, 27, joined the NFL in 2018 as a 6th-Round draft pick in 2018 by the Indianapolis Colts. He’s 6’2″ and 200 pounds, a big-bodied pass-catcher who has grabbed 9 career receptions for 124 yards in his career.

Here’s his full resume:

  • Indianapolis Colts (2018–2019)
  • Pittsburgh Steelers (2019–2020)
  • Baltimore Ravens (2021)
  • Philadelphia Eagles (2021–2022)
  • Birmingham Stallions (2023)
  • Philadelphia Eagles (2023)
  • Birmingham Stallions (2024–present)

Cain hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2020.

2. Justin Hall (WR)

Hall, 25, has never played a regular season snap in the NFL, discovered by the Las Vegas Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2022. He’s smaller than Cain, checking in at 5’8″ and 189 pounds.

He last played for the Houston Roughnecks, an XFL squad, in 2023. Hall played college ball at Ball State from 2017 to 2021. There, he was rather productive, with 5,359 all-purpose yards, and was classified as the Cardinals’ primary deep threat.

3. Dax Milne (WR)

A college teammate of Vikings quarterback Jaren Hall, Milne has the most experience of the group, appearing in 28 games for the Washington Commanders in 2021 and 2022. He did not see a regular season field in 2023. The 25-year-old served as the Commanders’ primary kick and punt returner in 2022, his NFL claim to fame to date.

Milne caught 15 passes from various Washington quarterbacks in 2021 and 2022 for 120 yards and a touchdown. Washington unearthed Milne from Round 7 of the 2021 NFL Draft.

And for context, these are the Vikings’ wide receivers on the current 91-man roster:

  • WR1: Justin Jefferson
  • WR2: Jordan Addison
  • WR3: Jalen Nailor
  • WR4: Brandon Powell
  • WR5: Trishton Jackson
  • WR6: Jeshaun Jones
  • WR7: Trent Sherfield
  • WR8: Ty James
  • WR9: Lucky Jackson
  • WR10: Thayer Thomas
  • WR11: Malik Knowles

It is unclear if any of the three tryouts will result in a contract, and if so, whoever joins the Vikings would likely compete for a practice squad spot in 2024.

Minnesota’s first preseason game is four days away — a home contest versus the Raiders.
