The Minnesota Vikings’ free agent decisions have moved at a steady clip this week, starting Monday with about 25 in-house choices on players. Some men have been re-signed, others trekked elsewhere, and now 11 internal free agents await their fate in Minnesota.

These 11 Vikings Free Agents Remain Unsigned

As of March 16th, these 11 players have not been extended by Minnesota:

  • RB Cam Akers
  • LB Anthony Barr
  • QB Joshua Dobbs
  • K Greg Joseph
  • DT James Lynch
  • OT Oli Udoh
  • G Chris Reed
  • WR K.J. Osborn
  • IOL Dalton Risner
  • DL T.J. Smith
  • LB Nick Vigil

The list is extensive and indicates more Vikings-themed news is afoot. These players have received contracts and are back in the saddle for 2024:

  • Theo Jackson, S — Extended 2/21.
  • Nick Muse, TE — Extended 3/5
  • Johnny Mundt, TE — Extended 3/8
  • David Quessenberry, OT — Extended 3/11
  • Blake Brandel, OL — Extended 3/11
  • Brandon Powell, WR — Extended 3/12
  • Jonathan Bullard, DT — Extended 3/13

And these players have new NFL homes (or are still searching for them) as of Saturday evening:

  • Alexander Mattison, RB — Released 3/4
  • Kirk Cousins, QB — Signed with Falcons 3/11
  • Marcus Davenport, EDGE — Signed with Lions 3/11
  • Jordan Hicks, LB — Signed with Browns 3/11
  • Dean Lowry, DT — Released 3/12
  • William Kwenkeu, ILB — Released 3/12
  • Hakeem Adeniji, OT — Signed with Browns 3/12
  • Danielle Hunter, EDGE — Signed with Texans 3/12
  • D.J. Wonnum, EDGE — Signed with Panthers 3/14
  • Khyiris Tonga, DT — Signed with Cardinals 3/15
  • Troy Dye, LB — Signed with Chargers 3/15
  • Austin Schlottmann, C — Signed with Giants 3/15

Dalton Risner and K.J. Osborn arguably should fetch the most attention of those still not signed. Minnesota re-signed Blake Brandel for three years and $9.5 million, a hint he could end up as the Vikings’ starting left guard. That would disqualify a Risner reunion in purple. We shall see.

Risner tweeted Tuesday, “Just In case anyone was wondering… I’ve started 73 games over 5 years in the league… missing only 4 games due to injury… earning the starting spot amongst 3 different coaching staffs… I’ve never asked for a bag, simply just a starting guard contract.”

That’s usually an agent’s job to uplift but to each their own. On Osborn, well, he likely would’ve been re-signed by Minnesota if his return was a priority. Keep an eye on the New Orleans Saints as a landing spot for Osborn.

For newcomers, these external free agents have joined the Vikings this offseason:

  • A.J. Green, CB —1 Year, $1.05m (CLE)
  • Jonathan Greenard, EDGE — 4 Years, $76m (HOU)
  • Andrew Van Ginkel, EDGE — 2 Years, $20m (MIA)
  • Blake Cashman, ILB — 3 Years, $25.5m (HOU)
  • Sam Darnold, QB — 1 Year, $10m (SF)
  • Parker Romo, K — XFL
  • Aaron Jones, RB — 1 Year, $7m (GB)
  • Jerry Tillery, DT — 1 Year, $3.75m (LAR)
  • Trent Sherfield, WR — 1 Year $1.79m (BUF)
  • Dan Feeney, OL — 1 Year (CHI)

Vikings fans will also monitor Cam Akers, Joshua Dobbs, and Greg Joseph, if only to learn where each ends up around the league. Oli Udoh, as well, a longtime Viking, could be a player that Minnesota re-signs for depth purposes.

Free agency generally has a “second wave,” as many describe, and that is ongoing. Several decent players remain on the open market.

The 2024 NFL Draft is 5.5 weeks away.
