The Minnesota Vikings moved to 2-0 with a 23-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers. The Vikings made a mockery of their underdog status and controlled most of the game. The game could and should have been more comfortable than a six-point difference and the need to recover an onside kick. Nevertheless, a big win proved the Vikings mean business this season.

Reactions to Vikings Win over 49ers

Kevin O’Connell’s locker room speech was spot on when he described the Vikings going toe-to-toe with a team that defines themselves by that style of football in the 49ers — to be able to do that and come out on top was impressive. O’Connell also got emotional post-game talking up QB Sam Darnold.

The praise went the other way as well, with Brian O’Neill claiming, “We knew it was a touchdown before we walked out to the line of scrimmage” regarding the play call made by the Vikings head coach for Jalen Nailor’s touchdown catch.

Speaking to Sky Sports (UK) after the game Josh Metellus told Ndamukong Suh that the defense’s goal for this season is to be the number one defense in the league. They are certainly making their case through two weeks of the season!

Former NFL quarterback and current CBS analyst Chris Simms declared the Vikings playoff caliber, with special mention of O’Connell and Brian Flores’s ability to match anyone in terms of coaching. The Vikings’ head coach’s reputation continues to grow, and it’s about time he was tied down to a new long-term contract.

Vikings star left tackle Christian Darrisaw was in a boisterous mood post-game when asked about the job the OL had done to keep the 49ers star edge rusher Nick Bosa quiet. “Yeah we had him in the dirt all game… he seemed pretty frustrated after the game, hopefully, someone takes away his car keys tonight.” Minnesota’s OL has come up against two strong defensive fronts in the opening two games and stood up well — particularly on the edge.

Jefferson Injury Fears Allayed

The biggest concern from the game was Justin Jefferson’s being knocked out with a leg injury — later revealed to be a quad. Vikings fans waited with bated breath, but any concerns of a significant injury were allayed as Jefferson spoke post-game. Jefferson declared he was not overly concerned and would be ready for next week, describing the injury as just a “lil thigh bruise, contusion, whatever you want to call it.”

Finally, for a bit of fun, we have WWE Hall of Famer Sgt Slaughter proclaiming that the Vikings are coming for the Lions.

Detroit-born Slaughter grew up in Minneapolis and has his football fandom firmly nailed to the Vikings’ mast. The Vikings play the Lions in Week 7 after the bye week. Next, the Vikings return to US Bank Stadium to face the unbeaten Houston Texans.
