Purple Rumor Mill: Tom Brady to Vikings, Mac Jones as an Option, Bo Richter

VikingsTerritory’s Purple Rumor Mill is a two-day chronicle each week. All the week’s rumors are lassoed and plopped in two spots — articles on Saturday and Sunday — for review. Today is the August 18th edition.

Purple Rumor Mill: Tom Brady to Vikings, Mac Jones as an Option, Bo Richter

Remember — rumors are rumors. What you read on weekends in these pieces is what the world is talking about pertaining to the Vikings, not necessarily items that will come to fruition.

Here’s the second batch of the week. Yesterday’s can be read here.

Rumor: Tom Brady could be an option for Minnesota if something happens to Sam Darnold.

MSN also included Brady in a list of Vikings replacement quarterbacks here.

The theory suggests Brady could join the Vikings if something happened to Sam Darnold. Brady is 47 and scheduled to announce NFL games this season. In April, Brady sounded more than open to a comeback. “I’m not opposed to it. I don’t know if they’re going to let me if I become the owner of an NFL team,” he said on the DeepCut with VicBlends podcast. “But I don’t know — I’m always going to be in good shape, always be able to throw the ball. To come in for a little bit like Michael Jordan coming back, I don’t know if they’d let me, but I wouldn’t be opposed to it.”

Brady also said this week on an Italian yacht: “I just want to make sure all those young bucks in the NFL know that if I still wanted to come out of retirement, they still got something to deal with.”

His former coworkers, Kevin O’Connell and Brian Flores, are also employed by the Vikings.

This theory would glow white-out if Sam Darnold got injured. Until then, it’s a nothingburger.

Rumor: The Vikings should trade for Mac Jones.

Patriots QB Should

The Vikings are on tap to start Sam Darnold in 2024 after rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy’s season-ending meniscus tear last weekend. But one NFL analyst claims that solution isn’t wise and that Minnesota should explore a trade for Jacksonville Jaguars QB2 Mac Jones instead.

“If I was the Vikings I’d trade for Mac Jones. Sam Darnold is not QB1 for 17 games,” FS1 Kevin Wildes tweeted Wednesday.

The New England Patriots, the club that drafted Jones in the 1st Round three years ago, shipped Jones to Jacksonville in March for a 6th-Round pick, where he’ll be the go-to guy if something happens to Trevor Lawrence. The Vikings, on the other hand, employ the aforementioned Darnold, Nick Mullens, and Jaren Hall on the current depth chart.

In other news, Minnesota signed Matt Corral, dampening any trade theories involving Jones.

Rumor: Undrafted free agent Bo Richter is on pace to make the 53-man roster.

Orlando Ramirez-USA TODAY Sports

Richter played like a madman in Minnestota’s first preseason game — so much so that it might seem like a travesty to let him hit the practice squad. He could easily be stolen by another team. Many believed fellow undrafted free agent Gabriel Murphy would land a roster spot, but Richter appears to have stolen the show on the UDFA front.

He’s not a lock, but Richter should be on the regular season squad.
