Purple Rumor Mill: The Big Vikings Buzz, Travis Kelce’s Bold Vikings Comment, a New Romo
VikingsTerritory’s Purple Rumor Mill is a two-day chronicle each week. All the week’s rumors are lassoed and plopped in two spots — articles on Saturday and Sunday — for review. Today is the St. Patrick’s Day edition.
Purple Rumor Mill: The Big Vikings Buzz, Travis Kelce’s Bold Vikings Comment, a New Romo
Remember — rumors are rumors. What you read on weekends in these pieces is what the world is talking about pertaining to the Vikings, not necessarily items that will come to fruition.
Here’s the second batch of the week. Yesterday’s can be read here.
Rumor: The buzz is real — the NFL community believes the Vikings are mere weeks from making another huge move via trade for a rookie quarterback.
ESPN’s Matt Miller wrote about the Vikings after the purple team’s splashy trade with the Houston Texans on Friday, “With Cousins in Atlanta and Russell Wilson in Pittsburgh, the Vikings (No. 11) and Broncos (No. 12) are trade-up candidates. There is considerable buzz about Minnesota trying to move into the top five to secure a quarterback such as McCarthy or potentially Maye/Daniels if either falls past New England.”
It would make sense for the Vikings to shoot for the stars via a rookie quarterback after the Kirk Cousins era.
“Friday saw the Vikings make a move to add an additional first-round selection (No. 23) from the Texans — in exchange for 2024 second- and sixth-round picks, plus a 2025 second-rounder. With two first-round picks, the Vikings now own the draft capital to fly up the board for a quarterback. The latest leaguewide rumor has the Vikings trading to No. 4 overall, where the Cardinals are in a sweet spot to trade out with a quarterback-needy team,” Miller added.
You should consider a Vikings’ trade into the Top 4 by or on draft night close to a lock.
Rumor: Travis Kelce believes Sam Darnold is on the brink of a career reclamation with the Vikings.
Kelce said this week, “Minnesota news broke that the Vikings are signing former Niners quarterback Sam Darnold, which is a great signing for them. I think Sam has got a lot of good football left in him as well. Had a tough scenario over there in Carolina. I think he’s due for a comeback story, man.”
Darnold probably will improve in Kevin O’Connell’s offense, surrounded by Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, Christian Darrisaw, and Brian O’Neill. Whether that’s to the tune of a franchise quarterback remains to be seen.
Drafting Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy for the job is likely a safer long-term bet.
Rumor: Parker Romo is the Vikings’ new kicker. Signed, sealed, and delivered.
Romo signed a two-year deal with Minnesota, so he feels like the kicking solution. However, none of the contract is fully guaranteed. Fans shouldn’t rule out a new Vikings kicker from the draft or undrafted free agency.
Back-to-back purple leadership regimes love spring and summer kicking competitions.
