Purple Rumor Mill: Jordan Addison Update, Dalton Risner, Vikings’ Next Contract Extension
VikingsTerritory’s Purple Rumor Mill is a two-day chronicle each week. All the week’s rumors are lassoed and plopped in two spots — articles on Saturday and Sunday — for review. Today is the July 28th edition.
Purple Rumor Mill: Jordan Addison Update, Dalton Risner, Vikings’ Next Contract Extension
Remember — rumors are rumors. What you read on weekends in these pieces is what the world is talking about pertaining to the Vikings, not necessarily items that will come to fruition.
Here’s the second batch of the week. Yesterday’s can be read here.
Rumor: A suspension for Jordan Addison feels inevitable.
Until Monday, a few Vikings fans waited to hear “all the facts” about Addison’s arrest, holding out hope that the situation was a strange misunderstanding. All that went out the window when O’Connell expressed disappointment over the incident.
“We’re disappointed in Jordan. We care about these players. We really do. We want to make sure we’re doing our part for the development on the field,” head coach Kevin O’Connell said at the start of training camp. “The other aspect of that is the off-the-field, the life skills, and the development of decision-making and learning how important it is within our culture — which we’re very proud of — that our players understand personal responsibility and accountability.”
The man obviously did something wrong, which makes sense because blocking a lane of freeway traffic while asleep, accompanied by a suspicion of DUI charge, is rarely accidental.
Addison told reporters personally on Wednesday: “Whatever’s out there for me, whatever comes with it, I’ll own up to everything. I feel like anything that comes my way is meant to happen or is deserved.”
It sounds like he knows a suspension may be on the way. That’s probably how this latest incident ends.
Rumor: Dalton Risner may switch positions and play right guard this season — not left guard.
Risner said at the first week of training camp, “Whatever they need me to do, I’m there. right tackle, right guard, center, tight end, wide receiver, you name it, I’m ready to rock.”
The veteran lineman found reps in Eagan at right guard, not left — his organic position from the last five seasons. Blake Brandel seems to have a grip on the starting LG job, at least at the beginning of training camp, so Risner vs. Ed Ingram at right guard is a real development.
The good news is that Risner doesn’t seem too upset about it.
Rumor: Camryn Bynum is the next man up for a Vikings contract extension.
The Vikings front office shocked everyone this week, extending Christian Darrisaw for the long haul, a deal most didn’t think would occur until the 2025 offseason.
Bynum, too, has entered the chat for an extension, and Minnesota may look to nail down his services for the long haul sometime before the start of the 2024 regular season. The veteran safety has one year left on his rookie contract, and now is the natural time for those discussions to heat up.
KSTP’s Darren Wolfson said on SKOR North in June, “I did talk with Cam Bynum about a potential contract extension … my sense is there is mutual interest on getting an extension done whether it’s right before training camp / late July… or before the opener before the New York Giants.”
Justin Jefferson? Check. Darrisaw? Check. Bynum is likely next in line.
