Let the Brett Rypien era at QB3 begin.

Out of Nowhere, Vikings Cut Popular QB.

That’s the word from the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday, as the franchise waived QB3 Jaren Hall and signed veteran passer Brett Rypien.

Wow
Minnesota QB Jaren Hall addressed the media from the TCO Performance Center on Wednesday. Hall makes his first career start on Sunday, November 5th, at the Atlanta Falcons and is the first Vikings to make a first-ever start at quarterbacks since Teddy Bridgewater in 2014.

Star Tribune‘s Ben Goessling tweeted, “Change at QB for the Vikings: They’re signing Brett Rypien and waiving Jaren Hall.”

The move fell out of the sky, especially because many Vikings fans had fallen in love with Hall due to his performance in the final two preseason games. It’s worth noting, though, that Hall was injured in last weekend’s tryst at the Philadelphia Eagles, and when more information about his waiver is fully revealed, his recovery timeline might be longer than most expect.

Sometimes, the shock of a waiver dissipates when injury details come to light hours or days later. Stay tuned on Hall.

On Rypien, well, Minnesota adds a journeyman. Here’s his NFL resume to date:

  • Denver Broncos (2019–2022)
  • Los Angeles Rams (2023)
  • Seattle Seahawks (2023)
  • New York Jets (2023)
  • Chicago Bears (2024)
  • Minnesota Vikings (2024)

The nephew of former NFL quarterback Mark Rypien, Rypien has appeared in 10 NFL games, starting 4 and tallying 950 passing yards, 4 touchdown passes, and 9 interceptions since 2019. He’s known for footwork and accuracy, while his arm strength and mobility have been considered weaknesses dating back to the 2019 NFL Draft’s lead-up.

Of course, he’s a QB3 and probably won’t play for the Vikings unless a litany of injuries arise.

On Hall, if the waiver is permanent, his story in Minneapolis will be considered brief in hindsight. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah spent a 5th-Round pick on Hall — and, at least temporarily, said sayonara 16 months later. In a limited sample, his throws were often late or high to pass-catchers, but he undoubtedly fired up preseason momentum this month.

Check any branch of social media, and you will find utter outrage regarding the move, as Hall had garnered a bit of a cult following in the last few weeks. And most don’t believe in Rypien’s NFL sustainability.

The for-now Hall cut arrives as Adofo-Mensah has been unafraid to cut ties with his own draft picks. In the last two weeks, the Vikings have dropped Andrew Booth, Lewis Cine, Jaquelin Roy — and now Hall.

If Hall’s waiver involves an injury designation, that information will be revealed in the next few days, and he’d likely rehab with the team, with sights set on a 2025 return.

Hall turned 26 in March.
