Former Vikings QB Gets Shoutout in Eminem Song

Somehow, a former Minnesota Vikings quarterback, currently a free agent, is getting name-drop recognition on an Eminem album.

Former Vikings QB Gets Shoutout in Eminem Song

Eminem released The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) last week, his 12th studio album — and Kellen Mond was mentioned in a song, if that can be believed.

In the song Fuel, artist JID, who is featured on the track, rapped:

In the pocket, the rocket like Kellen Mond
Mama told me the power was in the tongue
But it probably ain’t powerful as a gun
All of you little cowards get devoured, I’m givin’ out flowers to anyone
I ain’t been out the house in a minute ’cause I ain’t wit’ it if the money is miniature

– JID | Fuel | The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce)

The album is trending toward No. 1 on the charts, which would knock Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department from the spot. Swift’s album has led the way since April.

As for Mond in Fuel, well, nobody is too sure about the connection. Eminem is an intense Detroit Lions fan, but Mond has no connection to Detroit. He’s from Texas. The shoutout must be derived from Eminem’s or JID’s ardor for college football, as Mond produced a wonderful career at Texas A&M.

Mond last backed up Anthony Richardson and Gardner Minshew on the Indianapolis Colts roster in 2023, though he saw no regular season playing time. The 25-year-old Mond also last spent time with the Cleveland Browns in 2022 and 2023 before rookie quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson effectively stole his job during the preseason. Too, he auditioned for the Carolina Panthers roster in September when Bryce Young was temporarily injured but did not land a gig.

The New Orleans Saints signed Mond in April but released him four weeks later.

Mond was chosen by the Vikings’ former leadership regime in 2021 as a possible contingency plan for QB1 Kirk Cousins in the 2021 NFL Draft. Fans constantly argued whether Cousins was actually a true franchise quarterback, so the addition of Mond was considered an exciting what-if. But the 3rd-Rounder didn’t pan out and has bounced around the NFL in 23 months since departing Minnesota.

The Vikings evaluated Mond during 2022 training camp and preseason, leading to a trade involving Nick Mullens from the Las Vegas Raiders. The moment Mullens set foot in Eagan, Minnesota, he became the Vikings QB2, leaving Mond as the odd man out and an eventual journeyman quarterback.

Fuel also mentioned Johnny Manziel, another Texas A&M alumnus.
