Another WR3 Available to Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings have shown little interest in adding an extra receiver for their WR3 spot on the roster, even though men like Hunter Renfrow, Michael Thomas, and Julio Jones, among others, are available on the open market — and the Vikings have about $26 million in cap space.

But if the club changes its mind, former 2nd-Rounder Denzel Mims became available this week, according to NFL Network‘s Mike Garafolo. “The Steelers are waiving WR Denzel Mims, source says. Former Jets second-round pick had been with Pittsburgh since last October on the practice squad,” Garafolo tweeted Tuesday.

For now, these are the Vikings wide receivers on the 91-man roster:

WR1: Justin Jefferson
WR2: Jordan Addison
WR3: Brandon Powell
WR4: Trent Sherfield
WR5: Jalen Nailor
WR6: Trishton Jackson
WR7: Lucky Jackson
WR8: Thayer Thomas
WR9: Malik Knowles
WR10: Ty James
WR11: Jeshaun Jones

Most believe the WR3 gig is a threeway showdown between Powell, Sherfield, and Nailor, though one of the Jacksons or a different undrafted free agent could spring up for an audition. In theory, signing Mims for cheap would add another contender to the mix.

Mims has never taken off in the NFL and may only have a couple of chances left. In fact, when his shine started to wear off two years ago, Minnesota was mentioned in the trade rumor mill for his services, but general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah grabbed Jalen Reagor instead.

Here’s Mims’ NFL resume to date:

  • New York Jets (2020–2022)
  • Detroit Lions (2023)
  • Pittsburgh Steelers (2023)

The Lions and Steelers indeed employed Mims last year, but the man did not see any regular season action. He was basically a forgotten man. To date, Mims has played in 30 career games while tabulating 42 catches for 676 yards and zero touchdowns. His catch percentage of 45.7% is particularly poor, but signing Mims for cheap for a camp battle would have little downside.

Otherwise, Minnesota can do nothing more at WR3 and hope the best of Powell, Sherfield, or Nailor emerges at training camp and in the preseason. The room doesn’t lack bodies. It’s also worth noting that the NFL features a single roster cutdown day in August, and over 700 men will hit free agency. Should the summer go poorly for the Vikings at WR3, a handful of decent WR3 prospects will hit the wire.

Mims will turn 27 in October and is 6’3″, 207 pounds.
