A year ago, the Washington Commanders sent edge rusher Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears. While he didn’t directly impact the Minnesota Vikings, his presence was felt within the division. If Jonathan Allen could be had, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah could go grab a talent from the same team.

During the NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings watched an ideal first-round play out. Getting their quarterback of the future without needing to pay a premium in prospect capital and then adding an incredible edge rusher was a great allocation of two first-round picks. However, without the ability to make moves for a while after that, they couldn’t secure a difference-making defensive tackle.

The defensive tackle position is one that the Vikings have all but punted on this offseason. Jerry Tillery may figure it out while being given a fresh start, but the franchise didn’t win the services of former Miami Dolphins star Christian Wilkins. Brian Flores would see his defense benefit from an upgrade on the line, and Dustin Baker’s suggestion seems to nail it.

“The most expensive trade on the list, adding Allen would undeniably put a punctuation mark on the offseason. He produced a quieter year than normal last season but could bounce back in 2024. The two-time Pro Bowler has no more guaranteed money on his current contract, and Washington could deal him this summer for a fresh start. Meanwhile, the Commanders drafted Jer’Zhan Newton at Allen’s spot five weeks ago. Newton should be relatively game-ready.”

Handing over a couple of picks isn’t going to light up the eyes of those who love the NFL Draft, but as we saw this year with the Dallas Turner trade, there’s no reason to hoard mid-round picks if greater talent can be acquired. There is an avenue for guys drafted later to be developed, but proven commodities or high-quality talent should always take precedence.

The former 17th overall pick has twice been named to the Pro Bowl and can rack up considerable sacks despite coming right up the gut. Along with additions like Turner, Jonathan Greenard, and Andrew Van Ginkel, Allen would provide Minnesota with an impressive group despite complete turnover at the edge position.

The Vikings might be done with free agency, but they should still be involved in the offseason trade market.
