Kirk Cousins Has Made the Vikings Look Genius

There was a time when the Minnesota Vikings considered bringing back Kirk Cousins. That probably ended when his desired contract eclipsed crazy territory. Thankfully for them, the Atlanta Falcons bit the bullet, and now they’re ready to pull the trigger on sitting him down and sending him out.

Kirk Cousins Has Made the Vikings Look Genius

It remains to be seen what will happen to Kirk Cousins. He isn’t close to the same quarterback, and that’s bad news for everybody involved. The former Minnesota Vikings signal-caller has looked like a pumpkin since the team signed him to a massive payday. They have already drafted his backup, and calls for his presence continue to grow louder.

Cousins could not have loved Michael Penix Jr. being the outcome of a draft pick better suited to help him succeed. For Atlanta, though, it’s hard not to see the rookie as an option capable of filling the small shoes that Cousins has put in front of him.

Over his last five games, Cousins has thrown nine interceptions while generating just a single touchdown pass. His 16 total interceptions lead the league, and it has taken him 14 games to throw the same amount of touchdowns (18) that he did last year in just eight. To put it bluntly, things have been disastrous.

Minnesota avoided this reality as well. They opted for a bridge quarterback in Sam Darnold. They leaned into Kevin O’Connell as a good coach and believed in their infrastructure’s ability to produce with whoever was under center. Of course, as their 12-2 record proves, they were right.

The Falcons haven’t completely closed the door on Cousins continuing to play for them. They should, though. Barely able to best former Atlanta quarterback Desmond Ridder, there’s nothing else that the Falcons should be waiting to see. They are watching the playoffs slowly slip from their grasp, and it’s their quarterback that is tying an anchor to a sinking ship.

It’s unfortunate that this is how the Cousins saga looks like it will end. He’s a great guy who is easy to root for as a human being. He has always been out for the money, though, and he has grabbed plenty of it. However, he’ll become a forgotten footnote in the league and has done nothing to cement any legacy.
