Fabian Moreau Can’t Be it … Right?

The Minnesota Vikings cornerback room has had question marks all offseason. Of course, different things have impacted that depth. Fully expected to make moves, the first has been the addition of veteran Fabian Moreau, but is that really it?

Fabian Moreau Can’t Be it … Right?

The 30-year-old Fabian Moreau was taken in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons with Washington before bouncing between the Falcons, Giants, and Broncos the past three years. Of the 106 games Moreau has played in the NFL, he has started 56 of them. Calling him a battle-tested veteran would be fair.

As a regular starter the past three seasons, Moreau has intercepted just a single pass in 46 games. He has defended 28 passes and racked up 127 total tackles. As a coverage guy, that leaves plenty to be desired, even if it’s enough to get the job done.

Of course, there is the reality that Moreau hasn’t yet worked with Brian Flores. Maybe the Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator will be capable of getting the most out of the veteran. That would be ideal for the overall viability of Kevin O’Connell’s squad, but it’s also probably something of a reach.

Moreau shouldn’t realistically slot in ahead of Byron Murphy Jr. or Shaq Griffin. That puts him in competition for the third cornerback spot or roster depth. In that vein, he probably is useful, but the Vikings also need to present more on defense. Names like Xavien Howard and Stephon Gilmore have been brought up, but neither has been cemented to this point.

The Vikings have cap space to do something on defense, but it could be that free agents are looking for better landing spots. Veterans may be at a point where ring chasing is the desired path, and even in the best-case scenario, that’s not something logical to happen for the Vikings this season.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah will likely continue to work through his roster construction well into the preseason. Another cornerback could be among those moves, and that makes it unlikely that Moreau is truly it.
