Are the Vikings OGs Getting an Extended Tryout to Start the Season?
The Minnesota Vikings put the finishing touches on their initial 53-man roster Tuesday. In doing so, they tabbed Blake Brandel and Ed Ingram as their starting guards. With Dalton Risner headed to injured reserve, there may be an extended tryout for the pairing.
Are the Vikings OGs Getting an Extended Tryout to Start the Season?
All offseason, we have heard about the Vikings’ excitement regarding Blake Brandel moving inside. He is no longer destined to back up both tackle spots. While he has not previously played this position, he could be better suited for it. Brandel can help bolster the line next to Christian Darrisaw by sliding inside.
Ed Ingram retains his starting right guard spot on the other end of the line. It hasn’t exactly happened with a vote of confidence, though. There was a period where Tyrese Robinson looked like he would challenge for the role, and Ingram was asked to play with the backups during the preseason. We’re multiple years into his professional career, and there’s still uncertainty as to whether Ingram can handle the position.
That’s where Dalton Risner comes in. The fan favorite wasn’t re-signed immediately this offseason, but he eventually returned to the team. He couldn’t stay healthy and get on the field for the preseason, but he has been kept with an injured reserve designation, allowing him to return.
When Risner is finally ready, four weeks into the season, there will be tape on both Vikings guards. How each is faring could determine the opportunity awaits the longtime veteran. Despite Brandel having never played the position before, you’d think that Ingram owns a shorter leash.
Minnesota will need to pivot as the season goes on regarding how they want to play out the season. Sam Darnold is the quarterback who has to work; otherwise, things will go downhill fast. The rookie J.J. McCarthy won’t be able to play savior at any point this year, and losing out of the gate could set things off on a bad note.
Kevin O’Connell needs his offensive front to provide time for his offense to work. The Vikings still possess an incredible amount of playmakers, and allowing each to operate and contribute is necessary. Who winds up playing those key spots the most remains to be seen, but Risner is waiting in the weeds.
