Remember in 2009 when Brett Favre authored his welcome-to-Minnesota moment versus the San Francisco 49ers?

Well, the man who caught the pass for a subsequent Minnesota Vikings win is perhaps on the cusp of a promotion. He’s Greg Lewis, a member of the Vikings for two seasons in 2009 and 2010.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero tweeted Tuesday morning, “Ravens WRs coach Greg Lewis will interview today for the Saints offensive coordinator job, per source. Lewis, the former NFL receiver, won two Super Bowls on Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City before joining Baltimore this past season.”

New Orleans parted ways with 2023 offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. on January 16th after a disappointing 9-8 playoffs-less season. The next offensive coordinator — it could be Lewis — will be tasked with rectifying New Orleans’ offense featuring QB1 Derek Carr, who had a decent first season with the Saints but nothing remarkable.

For newcomer Vikings fans, this was the reception from Lewis that etched him in eternal Vikings lore:

And this was Lewis’ resume as a player:

  • Philadelphia Eagles (2003–2008)
  • New England Patriots (2009)
  • Minnesota Vikings (2009–2010)

Then, as a coach, Lewis’ NFL resume dates back to 2015:

New Orleans Saints (2015)
Offensive assistant
Philadelphia Eagles (2016)
Wide receivers coach
Kansas City Chiefs (2017–2020)
Wide receivers coach
Kansas City Chiefs (2021–2022)
Running backs coach
Baltimore Ravens
(2023–present)
Wide receivers coach

Former Vikings offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak also interviewed for the open Saints OC gig last week, so the search is extensive. Lewis became available as a candidate after last weekend when his Ravens disappointingly lost at home to his old team, the Chiefs, in the AFC Championship. As a coach in the last several seasons, Lewis is more than accustomed to visiting the AFC title game.

The man’s resume is impressive and absolutely looks like a natural springboard to an offensive coordinator assignment. It’s diverse, with plenty of successful stops.

Current Vikings wide receiver coach Keenan McCardell, too, is expected to fetch offensive coordinator attention this cycle, though no interviews have formally been announced.

The Saints’ offense ranked 17th per DVOA in 2023, a middle-of-the-pack finish that explains Carmichael Jr.’s exit from the franchise. Carr passed for 3,878 passing yards, 25 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. He ranked 15th leaguewide per EPA+CPOE. The next offensive coordinator will hope to drag that mark closer to the Top 10.

Lewis will turn 44 next month.
