Vikings Trade for a Second First Rounder Intensifies the Offseason

Vikings Territory Breakdown Podcast

Kirk Cousins is no longer the Minnesota Vikings starting quarterback (you might have heard that). Thus, he’ll no longer be the lead to any discussion of the Purple. We buried the lead, slightly (as it is quarterback related), since Vikings GM Kwesi Adolfo-Mensah secured a trade of draft picks with the Houston Texans that appears to signal the Vikings’ desires to move up in the 2024 NFL Draft and grab their QB of the future.

The Vikings now have the 11th and 23rd pick in the upcoming draft, and most fans and observers tend to believe they are planning to move up into the top five (top 3?) picks to grab a rookie signal-caller. The speculation about those two first-round picks has run rampant and energized this important offseason for the Vikings. How high will they go? Who can they get? Will they move up at all? The next month and change of Draft Day anticipation will be intense.

Meanwhile, the Vikings have been active in free agency, both in signing and losing players. This past week they have brought in their top free agents (including Sam Darnold and Aaron Jones) for a press conference, announced the retention of some of their own players (Harrison Smith, Jonathan Bullard and Brandon Powell), grabbed a few others (Jerry Tillery, Dan Sweeny and Trent Sherfield) and lost several more (most notably defenders Danielle Hunter and D.J. Wonnem).

So. the fellas at the Vikings Territory Breakdown podcast (Joe Oberle, senior writer at vikingsterritory.com and purplePTSD.com and Mark Craig, NFL and Vikings writer for the Star Tribune and startribune.com) have a lot to talk about regarding all the changes to the Vikings roster. Tune in and check it all out.
