Vikings Reaping Rewards of Big Draft

Over the weekend, the Minnesota Vikings saw their new rookies put on practice uniforms for the first time. With a class highlighted by a pair of first-round picks, including a new quarterback, the excitement for the group is at an all-time high. Social media tells the same story.

Vikings Reaping Rewards of Big Draft

Of course, any time an NFL franchise drafts a first-round quarterback, the fanbase is going to show a relative level of excitement. That says the franchise is swinging for a new face at the most important position, and the hope is that the player becomes a foundational fixture.

J.J. McCarthy wasn’t taken in the top three, and the Vikings didn’t have to trade up in a fancy trade to acquire his services. While he is expected to sit behind Sam Darnold to start, he’ll eventually take over, and plenty of people seem excited to see that come to fruition. Posting a simple video of the new signal calling and throwing some passes, the Vikings feed saw more than 250,000 views from Twitter alone.

It wasn’t just McCarthy that represented a top pick for Minnesota, though, and edge rusher Dallas Turner has an even more likely path to starting in Week 1 for the Vikings. A simple video of a guy who could be replacing Danielle Hunter garnered over 50,000 views on the same platform.

A picture of “the new guys” netted the Vikings account more than 115,000 views, and there was no video attached at all. Of course, the NFL is a behemoth when it comes to eyeballs in this country, but the immediate impressions that such simple things can generate have to light up in the franchise marketing department when considering future opportunities.

At some point, these players will take over and become part of the next wave of Vikings stars. More of them coming through in that fashion will benefit both Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O’Connell, but nothing will be more imperative than getting the quarterback position right.
