The Minnesota Vikings are currently set to make their first selection of the 2024 NFL Draft with the 11th overall pick. That’s all fine and well, but they are positioned to move up in the draft with a pair of first-round picks. The New England Patriots draft third and have the pick that Minnesota should covet.

North Carolina star quarterback Drake Maye showed off his abilities during a pro day on Thursday. Before the festivities, the New England Patriots met with the draft prospect. It makes complete sense for Jerod Mayo’s group to have interest in the signal caller, but Minnesota must make sure they know that pick will be theirs.

When the Vikings look to trade up for a quarterback next month, they will have a few options. Caleb Williams is going off the board with the first overall pick to the Chicago Bears, but names like Jayden Daniels, Maye, and J.J. McCarthy should all be in play. McCarthy will likely remain at the 4th overall pick, but if Minnesota wants to pair Maye with high school coach Josh McCown, then trading into the top three makes sense.

When the Vikings ultimately make a selection that ushers in a new era post-Kirk Cousins, they must ensure everything is done to get their chosen player. Jumping up to fourth or fifth doesn’t put Minnesota in position to control their destiny. In that scenario, they would hope the board shakes out in their favor and want their guy to fall into their laps. Both Washington and New England need quarterbacks at number two and three, but getting the Patriots pick is what the front office should be targeting.

Maye represents one of the best quarterback prospects in recent seasons, and that type of player is absolutely what the Vikings need to reset at the position. He has a great pro style of play and brings a level of mobility that Minnesota hasn’t seen since the days of Daunte Culpepper. Taking in his pro day at North Carolina this week, the Vikings contingent should be plenty prepared to solidify their choice.

Ultimately, it won’t matter who meets with Maye, Daniels, or McCarthy. Only one team can make each individual their pick. The hope should be that Minnesota is watching other teams meet with Maye, only for him to wear purple.
