Former Teammate of Kirk Cousins Has Career Advice
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is due to hit free agency in less than three weeks, and everyone has an opinion on which team he should join and where he will sign.
Former Teammate of Kirk Cousins Has Career Advice
Cousins’ former teammates are not immune.
Robert Griffin III, a teammate of Cousins from the Washington days, tweeted an endorsement this week, telling Cousins to stay in Minnesota. Cousins is scheduled to hit free agency in 18 days, and if he listens to Griffin III, Minnesota should remain his employer.
Griffin III tweeted Wednesday, “The best place for Kirk Cousins is where he has been the last 6 years, Minnesota. Few teams that need a QB are closer to Super Bowl contention than the Vikings, Kirko Chains has familiarity with the personnel and was playing the best ball of his career before his injury.”
The once-promising quarterback turned NFL analyst also went on another crusade, endorsing Russell Wilson as a Hall of Famer on X, so he was filled with opinions on social media this week.
Cousins essentially took Griffin III’s job about 10 years ago, and Griffin III has maintained an array of opinions regarding Cousins since. “As you’ve seen, Cousins has been collecting checks there in Minnesota for a long time, taking them to 8-8, 9-7 seasons. If he has a bad start to the year like he did last year, I could see the fans and maybe the organization (Vikings) leaning toward [Kellen] Mond if he comes in and impresses,” Griffin incorrectly predicted to Bleacher Report in 2021.
The Vikings released Mond for poor performance 16 months after Griffin’s prophecy.
Griffin even implied three years ago that Cousins was mad or flustered by Mond’s presence, “Yeah, I can tell you that No. 8 in Minnesota is not real happy right now, because Kellen Mond represents exactly what he doesn’t do well.”
Then, in 2022, Griffin was on board with Vikings enthusiasm. After the Vikings toppled Griffin’s old team, the Commanders, the 32-year-old claimed the Vikings weren’t getting enough attention:
And now, he’s tweeting recommendations for Cousins, calling him by his affable moniker “Kirko Chainz,” and appears to have conducted an about-face pertaining to his teammate.
The Vikings and Cousins should arrive at a decision on his future in the next 2-3 weeks, and if Cousins departs, he is expected to command free-agent interest from the Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers, and maybe even the New England Patriots.
But if Griffin III gets his way, Cousins won’t leave Minnesota at all.
