Former Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle T.Y. McGill is free to sign anywhere in the NFL.

Former Viking Dropped by Browns on Christmas Eve

The Cleveland Browns dropped McGill on Christmas Eve after spending about six weeks in the AFC North. KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson tweeted Tuesday, “The Browns sign Andre Szmyt to practice squad, released T.Y. McGill from the practice squad.”

The San Francisco 49ers’, McGill’s on-an-off employer since 2022, cut him loose in November, and he signed on with the Browns. Now, he’ll await his next NFL assignment.

These are the Browns’ interior defensive linemen without McGill:

  • Dalvin Tomlinson
  • Mike Hall
  • Sam Kamara
  • Jowon Briggs
  • Michael Dwumfour (Practice Squad)
  • Maurice Hurst (IR)
  • Shelby Harris (IR)

McGill’s NFL resume is about as lengthy as it gets — a journeyman defender:

  • Seattle Seahawks (2015)
  • Indianapolis Colts (2015–2016)
  • Cleveland Browns (2017)
  • Kansas City Chiefs (2018)
  • Los Angeles Chargers (2018)
  • Philadelphia Eagles (2018)
  • Los Angeles Chargers (2018)
  • Washington Redskins (2019)
  • Los Angeles Chargers (2019)
  • New Orleans Saints (2019)
  • Philadelphia Eagles (2020–2021)
  • Washington Football Team (2021)
  • Minnesota Vikings (2021–2022)
  • San Francisco 49ers (2022–2024)
  • Cleveland Browns (2024)

McGill played for the Vikings in 2021, a free-agent depth addition who eventually saw action in two regular season games. He played 33 defensive snaps for the 2021 brand of Vikings.

Fast forward to the 2022 preseason, and McGill performed marvelously in the Vikings’ first two exhibition games against the Las Vegas Raiders and 49ers. He was injured in the final game and was expected to miss a few weeks. But preseason production be damned, the Vikings released McGill with an injury designation soon after. Most fans, at the time, thought he’d make the 53-man roster. No such luck.

In the summer of 2022, CBS Sports published an article called “things we learned” around the NFL in the preseason, and McGill’s rise to prominence was mentioned by author Jordan Dajani. He wrote about McGill, “Something that stood out to me was T.Y. McGill. He had five total tackles and 1.5 sacks this weekend after recording two sacks last week. McGill looks like he has a high motor. If he doesn’t win on his initial move, he will just keep pushing until he breaks through.”

McGill ultimately played one game for the Browns, including 12 defensive snaps.

He turned 32 last month and will likely latch onto another team’s practice squad soon or in the offseason.
