After stepping to the microphone to meet with reporters on Tuesday, a Minnesota Vikings Coach was looking to clear the air on comments made by his former player. The coach in question is none other than current Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores. See, Flores was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins for a couple of seasons before joining the Vikes’ staff in 2023.

But what a former player said about him didn’t exactly sit well with his reputation or general personality. However, he looks to have moved on and taken the comments in stride.

Current Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa questioned his coaching style. When Flores coached the Fins, Tagovailoa basically rode the bench for his first two seasons. However, his tone was much more professional when he stepped forward this week.

As the Vikings Coach told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday, “I’m genuinely, genuinely happy for the success that Tua has had, and I wish him nothing but the best.” But what needs to be analyzed about the current Vikings coach and his comments? Here’s a clearer explanation.

Despite the comments during his stint in Miami, Flores looks to have already won over his new squad’s defense.

While Flores realizes that his style of coaching may not be a winner, he realizes that it’s okay that coaches can’t always make everyone agree with one another.

As the Vikings coach also noted, “I think part of coaching is correcting. ‘m always going to correct. I’m always going to have a high standard. And I think, look, I’ve done a lot of reflecting on the situation, reflecting on the situation and communication.”

“I think there’s things that I could do better for sure, and I’ve grown in that way, and I’ve tried to apply the things that I could do better and the things that I’ve learned over the last two, three years.”

“But I would say over the long haul, I’ve had a lot of great relationships over my 21-year career here in the league. Players, coaches, personnel, equipment, people in the kitchen. I mean really across the board, I’ve had a lot of great relationships. I’m going to continue to do that, but I’m also always looking to get better and involved.”

“Look, I’m human. So that hit me in a way that wasn’t … positive for me. But at the same time, I’ve got to use that and say, ‘Hey, how can I grow from that? How can I be better?’ And that’s really where I’m at from that standpoint. Do I feel like that’s me? No. But how can I grow from that situation and create a world where that’s not the case that anyone says that about Brian Flores?”

But he is already making a good impression on his current defensive teammates. And he wants to carry that impact to another level and get himself involved with younger players.

“I want to make that same kind of impact, positive impact, pour into young people, helping them become as [Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell says] all the time, the best versions of themselves. And that’s really my goal, always at coaching. So, I wish nothing but the best to Tua and really more than anything, I’m just focused on the 2024 Vikings and the players we have.”

Yes, it’s perfectly understandable that everyone is human and can make mistakes. But Vikings coach and DC Brian Flores is looking to learn from his mistake and ensure that history does not repeat itself in Minnesota.
