Vikings Coach Advances to 2nd Round of Interviews for BAL Gig

The Minnesota Vikings have three coaches from the 2022 staff interviewing for other jobs around the NFL during the 2023 carousel.

Keenan McCardell, the team’s current wide receivers coach, has a hat in the ring for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator job, and quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson is eyeing the Los Angeles Chargers OC gig.

And on Friday, Minnesota’s tight end coach and passing game coordinator Brian Angelichio received encouraging news, reportedly getting a second-round nod for the Baltimore Ravens next batch of interviews for the open offensive coordinator position. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler tweeted, “Vikings pass-game coordinator Brian Angelichio has a second interview set for Ravens OC job, per source. He also interviewed for the Cowboys OC job Thursday. Busy time for veteran offensive coach.”

Angelichio has worked for the Vikings for one year, an addition to the coaching staff when Kevin O’Connell arrived from the Los Angeles Rams in 2022.

The Ravens lost to the Cincinnati Bengals on Wildcard Weekend, absent QB1 Lamar Jackson and victims of the now-famous Fumble in the Jungle. The loss inspired change as Ravens skipper John Harbaugh fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman a few days later. With either Lamar Jackson or “the next guy” at QB1 — Jackson isn’t secured in Baltimore for the long haul as of February 3rd — the Ravens will implement a new offensive coordinator.

And that could be Angelichio, who impressively made it to the next round of discussions. The Ravens have interviewed former Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, so Angelichio, until Friday, felt like a longshot or dark-horse candidate.

Angelichio, 50, has almost three decades of coaching experience under his belt and has been in the NFL on various coaching staffs since 2012, where he landed his first job as a TE coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Six teams have employed Angelichio for the same job:

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2012–2013)
  • Cleveland Browns (2014–2015)
  • Green Bay Packers (2016–2018)
  • Washington Commanders (2019)
  • Carolina Panthers (2020–2021)
  • Minnesota Vikings (2022–present)

In Minnesota, Angelichio also held passing game coordinator responsibilities. Now, he’ll get a crack at sniffing the Ravens big offensive job.

Baltimore’s offense was a mixed bag in 2022, ranking 20th in points per game but 2nd in yards per rush. Like the Chicago Bears, the Ravens preferred to run the ball to the utmost, placing 28th leaguewide in passing yards. It is unclear if a run-run-run style of football can still win Super Bowls in a pass-happy NFL. Perhaps the Philadelphia Eagles will weigh in during Super Bowl LVII.

Baltimore ranked 17th per offensive EPA/Play in 2022.
