Former Viking Signs with Dolphins

The NFL preseason kicks off Thursday night with the annual Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio, as the Cleveland Browns, led by former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kellen Mond, take on Zach Wilson’s New York Jets.

But before that, NFL teams continue to tweak 90-man rosters, and a former Vikings defender joined the Miami Dolphins on Thursday — safety Myles Dorn.

KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson tweeted on the X app, “Dolphins signed safety Myles Dorn and linebacker Mike Rose.”

Dorn was last a member of the Carolina Panthers, signed by general manager Scott Fitterer in January but was released about five weeks ago. If he plays his cards right, he could end up snagging a 53-man roster spot in Miami or perhaps a practice squad assignment.

The son of retired NFL cornerback Torin Dorn, the defender joined the Vikings via undrafted free agency in 2020 and stayed linked to the organization for three seasons. In 2022, Dorn lived on the practice squad for most of the year. The North Carolinian played 14 total games in Minnesota, tallying 208 special teams snaps but no defensive appearances.

Dorn would’ve played for the Vikings in 2022 if injuries arose to Harrison Smith, Camryn Bynum, Josh Metellus, or Theo Jackson. But aside from Lewis Cine’s broken leg in London, Minnesota’s safeties remained upright, for the most part.

The North Carolina alumnus stood out as a positive for the Vikings throughout preseason last August. He appeared in all three games and started one of them. Dorn recorded 13 tackles during the appearances and had a pair of passes defended.

The Dolphins safety room — which will change drastically in the next four weeks — currently looks like this:

  • Jevon Holland
  • Brandon Jones
  • DeShon Elliott
  • Verone McKinley III
  • Elijah Campbell
  • Keidron Smith
  • Myles Dorn

Last year, Miami’s defense ranked 15th in defensive DVOA, 19th in yards allowed, 24th in points allowed, and 24th in EPA/Play. The club added cornerback Cam Smith in Round 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft, linebacker David Long from the Tennessee Titans, EDGE rusher Malik Reed from the Pittsburgh Steelers, and recently cornerback Eli Apple from the Cincinnati Bengals via free agency.

The Dolphins also employ former Vikings defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman.

Dorn turned 25 in June. He also worked out for the Houston Texans last week.
