On Wednesday, Netflix announced that Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins would be one of three NFL quarterbacks featured in a new series this summer. Cousins wore a microphone for every game of the 2022 NFL season, and now fans will see behind-the-scenes like never before.

During the 2022 NFL season, Netflix had to be thrilled at choosing Cousins to participate in its new series. Not only did the Minnesota Vikings win 13 games and capture an NFC North title, but Cousins took on a whole new persona in becoming Kirko Chainz. How much of that will be shown in the series remains to be seen, but it’s hard to imagine that it won’t be a good deal of fun.

Joining Cousins is a pair of quarterbacks that couldn’t possibly capture different ends of the spectrum. Marcus Mariota began the year as Atlanta’s starter before being benched in favor of rookie draft pick Desmond Ridder. On the other side, Patrick Mahomes is featured with his second Super Bowl and MVP honors.

Netflix has called the show a docuseries, which would seemingly follow along the lines of their wildly popular Formula 1 show. While the series will certainly be primarily focused on football, the drama and insight into players out of their helmets should also be a draw. The Formula 1 series has created many new fans who were not invested in the sport.

The three quarterbacks should provide an exciting level of intrigue on their own as well. Mahomes is not nearly as involved in the spotlight as his brother and wife are. Mariota, while well-decorated at Oregon, has been an average veteran in the NFL while remaining pretty quiet. Cousins, too, has long had the personality of someone who sits back a bit, even if his position demands leadership.

HBO has significantly benefited from their NFL Training Camp series Hard Knocks over the years, and now it will be on Netflix to see what kind of magic they can drum up. Previous football series’ on the streaming service have done well. Especially notable is the Last Chance U seasons.

This offseason, the Vikings have some critical decisions to make regarding the future of Cousins and his contract status with the team. He holds a full no-trade clause and will take up a substantial amount of the salary cap space. He’ll undoubtedly have clarity well before the docuseries drops, but maybe this spurs a career in film after his playing days are over.
