Purple Rumor Mill: Chase Young, QB in the Draft, Jefferson Coinflip

Remember — rumors are rumors. What you read on weekends in these pieces is what the world is talking about pertaining to the Vikings, not necessarily items that will come to fruition.

Here’s the second batch of the week. Yesterday’s can be read here.

Rumor: The Vikings could pursue soon-to-be free agent Chase Young in the offseason.

Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports.

This one was born at Bleacher Report.

Examining free-agent landing spots, BR’s staff wrote this week about Young and the Vikings, “Minnesota is likely going to be looking for some edge defenders this offseason. Considering his age and potential, Young will be one of the top players available at the position.”

The Vikings are on tap to own about $52 million in cap space when the offseason rolls around.

“While the majority of his tenure in Washington was marred by injuries, he’s been healthy for the majority of this season and managed to rack up 6.5 sacks heading into the weekend, including a half-sack during his debut in San Francisco. Even if the Vikings bring DJ Wonnum back, pairing him with Young would give them a couple of good edge-rushers for years to come,” BR added.

Young to Minnesota makes a lot of sense, especially if Danielle Hunter leaves, so keep it on your radar.

Rumor: Minnesota will likely select a quarterback in Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Matthew Dobbins-USA TODAY Sports.

Well, depending on free agency’s outcome in March, plus Kirk Cousins’ status overall, the Vikings will probably make either an EDGE rusher or quarterback their first pick in April’s draft.

A Yahoo Sports mock draft connected LSU’s Jayden Daniels to the Vikings this week. Nate Tice wrote, “This Vikings team has a ton of offensive firepower with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and T.J. Hockenson and have a strong offensive line. Plopping Daniels and his mature play, along with the incredible creation ability he provides with his legs, could give him a chance to hit the ground running at the next level.”

Fans should hope for Daniels as the “next guy” at QB1, as his skillset would mesh wonderfully in Minnesota, particularly with Kevin O’Connell’s tutelage.

Rumor: Justin Jefferson never really had a serious chance to play last weekend at the Denver Broncos, but he has a realistic shot this Monday night.

How Will Jefferson’s Return Impact Vikings Offense?
Brad Rempel-USA TODAY Sports.

While the Vikings will likely play it safe with Jefferson and wait until Week 14 for his return, he does have a better chance to play this week than last.

Jefferson said on Friday, “If I miss this one, it’s going to be the seventh game, so it’s definitely frustrating, and it’s tough to be patient and try to make sure that an injury heals properly. It’s definitely not something I want to do, but it comes with the game, it comes with trying to be healthy, trying to be 100% and the safe route.”

The reigning Offensive Player of the Year has been on the shelf since Week 6.

“I’m not sure. We’ll see. We still have more days to practice and really evaluate everything. We’re going to weigh the options correctly, making sure that I’m feeling well and prepared to play a game, and if I’m feeling good, I will play,” Jefferson added.

This one is a total coinflip, with perhaps stronger hints suggesting Jefferson will sit one more week.
