Another Vikings Coach Lands Interview — with Ravens

The Baltimore Ravens lost to the Conference Championship-bound Cincinnati Bengals on Wildcard Weekend, absent QB1 Lamar Jackson and victims of the now-famous Fumble in the Jungle.

The loss inspired change as Ravens skipper John Harbaugh fired offensive coordinator Greg Roman last week. With either Lamar Jackson or “the next guy” at QB1 — Jackson isn’t secured in Baltimore for the long haul as of January 22nd — the Ravens will implement a new offensive coordinator.

And with any luck, that new offensive bossman could be a member of the Minnesota Vikings coaching staff, passing game coordinator and TE coach Brian Angelichio.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler tweeted about Angelichio Sunday, “Ravens have requested permission to interview Vikings pass-game coordinator Brian Angelichio for their offensive coordinator position, per source. Veteran NFL coach helped Minnesota to a top-five passing offense in 2022.”

Angelichio, 50, has almost three decades of coaching experience under his belt and has been in the NFL on various coaching staffs since 2012, where he landed his first job as a TE coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Six teams have employed Angelichio for the same job:

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2012–2013)
  • Cleveland Browns (2014–2015)
  • Green Bay Packers (2016–2018)
  • Washington Commanders (2019)
  • Carolina Panthers (2020–2021)
  • Minnesota Vikings (2022–present)

And in Minnesota, Angelichio also held passing game coordinator responsibilities. Now, he’ll get a crack at sniffing the Ravens big offensive job.

The Ravens reportedly have a few other prominent names on their radar: former Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. In that vein, Angelichio may be a longshot to land the gig.

Other teams are looking at members of Kevin O’Connell’s coaching staff as well. Quarterback coach Jerod Johnson drew the interest of the Los Angeles Chargers last week. CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones tweeted Saturday, “The Chargers have requested permission to interview Vikings assistant QBs coach Jerrod Johnson for their vacant offensive coordinator position, source says.”

Vikings offensive coordinator Wes Phillips was reportedly approached about the Chargers offensive coordinator job, too, but declined.

And then last Wednesday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport tweeted about Vikings wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell, “The Patriots have requested permission to speak with Vikings WRs coach Keenan McCardell for their OC position, sources say. He joins a growing list of candidates that also includes Bama OC Bill O’Brien.”

The Vikings ranked 18th in the NFL per offensive EPA/Play in 2022. They also finished tops in the business via 4th Quarter points scored.

Baltimore ranked 17th per the offensive EPA/Play metric.
